Had a scare with Artie tonight.

He has been fine health wise recently and in fact was out for a cuddle about 10 mins before this episode tonight.

I was just watching tv and spotted the cozy moving as if Artie was underneath, then I could hear him scrabbling - all this was out of character so went to check and found Artie all floppy and stressed, got him out and he was just lying on me all floppy, eyes darting about. He seemed comforted by being on me so wrapped him under my cardy and chatted away to him. I really thought I was going to lose him then but just kept him still and held and he did begin to recover.

I think this was another stroke like before which worried me as I'd read in a Peter G book that the 2nd one is worse. Artie then ate a small amount of cucumber and was very sleepy, I've since put him back in his cage, removing his wooden nestbox and just left his 2 fave cozy cups. He has crashed out and is sleeping a lot now, has eaten a bit of hay but is mainly sleeping. He is nice and warm and cosy in his fleece nest.

He can walk ok but is not right, I know when things are not right. He is an elderly guinea and normally is a sleepy head but this has knocked the stuffing out of him he is flat out.

I'm leaving him to rest/recover now, don't see I can do anything, he does not appear in pain so not giving painkillers at the mo. Not racing to the vets either I know it would stress him out more and went down that path with Freddie my previous guinea and not sure it was the right one.

I never work weekends but typically am working tomorrow for the College open day so out 9am - 2.30pm. At the moment I'm planning to go in as I think he will just be resting and Mum will be here, work is 3 miles away so if I need to I can grab a taxi and be home in 10 mins. I was going to meet a friend for late lunch after but won't now. Artie is use to me being out in the day and usually sleeps.

I hate those scares that was a really bad one, just like with Freddie, when he died always gets me and that was the 2nd time this has happened. All indicators going to a stroke. He has not shown signs of an ear infection or anything.

I will let him rest but will need to get some water in him after a while, he is not a big drinker but I will make sure he has a drink in the morning and will be upping the weight checks etc.

I wonder just how many strokes a guinea can survive if it was a stroke (and can't think it was anything else)

Restless night ahead I can tell, really hope Artie will be ok.

Bless you and Artie. I really hope you are ok.

To me this sounds more like some sort of seizure episode, but i may be wrong. The eyes flicking etc. I think also by the fact you have decribed he was very sleepy etc after. This typically describes the 'post ictal phase' where the body is tired out from the seizure.

I may be wrong. I would assume a stroke would cause problems with just one side of the body too.

Get well soon Artie, thinking of you both.

x.

Thanks he is exhausted and resting now in his cozy sack. He ventured out for some dry food which was a good sign.
Seizure is a possibility, he had head tilt after this but that's gone now and he is moving about fine. Maybe this is just something he will have during his life? Hope not as it's so scary. Will let him rest, hopefully he will make a full recovery.

Well a mystery this - he slept well and was out weeking for breakfast this morning!

I shall be off to work but only 3 miles away if needed and Mum's keeping an eye on him for me.

Just glad he's ok this morning!

Glad to hear Artie is looking his normal self this morning.
