I just bought some yesterday and the whole bag of it smelled like cow pat mixed with mould. It was the worst quality I ever bought. No joke, I tipped it out in the woods out the back of my house, and when I went out an hour or so later, I could smell it in the air, in this cold weather

I've used this many times over the years I've had piggies and never had a bad batch (I work above Wilko so it's a good stop gap if my hay supply is getting low). I wouldn't have tipped it away as Wilko's do a refund if you aren't happy with the purchase and it would be better to alert them to the bad batch you have come across

I threw the receipt away, I always end up washing them with my trousers. I only keep electrical goods receipts. I must start keeping them and repot the bad hay

Thanks for the heads up. I have a bag of wilko hay in the cupboard. I’ll be sure to give it a good whiff before feeding but I assume you just got a bad batch?

I would have still returned it without the receipt as the packaging is obvious it come from there ;)

I think it's good practice to have a good whiff of any batch of hay wherever it's brought from. We've had such bizarre weather extremes the last couple of years that I should imagine a lot of suppliers have struggled with top quality hay

Do you mean in the shop or as soon a si got it home? To be fair though I could see it was very brown before I got it, I was just desperate. Tesco has much better quality meadow, so I got that instead. My local kennelgate has ran out of meadow. Wilko have been fine before though

I mean when you get it home. Not sure the shops would be too happy with you ripping open bags for a sniff to pick the best one :))

I have! I also pull all the bags off the shelf looking for the best looking one.
With 6 piggies I get through a lot of hay so I mostly buy it direct from Nature's Own but if I ever have to buy from shops it gets an inspection before it comes home. Who cares if I get funny looks, I always put it back neatly.

I only poke one finger in the bag, only if the hay looks iffy, then I get one nostril over the hole and Inhale.

My youngest daughter refuses to come hay shopping with me now - 'Mum do you really have to sniff every bag?' :))
My eldest daughter is the first one to stick her nose in and check the quality.
I can not even imagine how they will tell the story of their childhood in 20 years!
