Hi, I dont really know where i should post this.
Today I visited a gardencentre in Wilton nr Daventry,Northants. In their pet shop there was about a dozen cages of rabbits, guineas & degus, all overcrowded & some not looking very healthy. one cage(max 4') had 4 rabbits & 4 guineas, the 2 rabbits were tearing round thumping, & the gps were huddled together in a small igloo. Can I report them to anyone?
are there any guidelines they have to abide by? would the RSCPA be interested? I felt like scooping them up & running out the shop!

Phone them anyway. I am sure that there are guidelines and they can give them to you.

Mods when these are got would it be worth having them on here?

Hi, sorry to hear of this awful ruddy shop. Your local council/authority are the ones that issue the licenses for the pet shops to operate in the sale of livestock. It would be really helpful, if you can bear it, if you could pop back in the shop asap and try and get photographic evidence of their poor condition, which would be useful against them for both the local authority and the rspca should you decide to contact them.

thinking again on this, the RSPCA Welfare Act states that pets must be kept in adequate housing with company of their own kind, so possibly would be interested in hearing about the pet shop..

praps I'll ring the Leicester rspca tomorrow & ask their advice. I dont suppose they'll
be able to do anything.

I'd have thought your council or whoever issues the licenses would be the one to contact?

I'm not sure the RSPCA will do anything if they've got adequate food and water etc. but I might be wrong! They should at least be able to point you in the right direction

I agree, the local council should be contacted. the RSPCA won't enforce their own guidelines because they are not law. They also seem to be strangely reluctant to take any action where businesses are concerned. However I think the Animal Welfare Act states that it IS the law to ensure that animals get treated for any medical conditions, so you could emphazise the health issue... in short, report them to both council and RSPCA if you can :)

Debbie I'm so glad you agree, I wondered if I was overreacting to it. When did you go there?

Kitty you are not over-reacting at all! It's dreadful! I know a lot of complaints have been made about this particular place too and yet nothing is ever done. I am going to PM you with all the info I already have and I think we should look at what we can do working together on this one. I've even thought about going to the local newspaper!
