I am currently in the process of rescuing two little piggies and wanted to get them the best hutch I could. I ended up ordering the Sharples and Grant Hutch N Run X Large from PetPlanet.co.uk. I took it out of the box and not only was the hutch awful quality (definitely not suitable for outdoor use) it was totally damaged (most of the wood had split) and dirty! It also had a funny chemical smell to it, my mum said it smelled like Creosote (although I don't know for sure anything like that has been used but it smelled chemically)! No way was I going to put two little rescue piggies in it!

So, I headed down to my local Country Wide store where I purchased a Lockes 2 Tier Hutch (£159 reduced from £199, only £9.01 more than that sharples one!). The hutch is huge (6ft) and amazing quality, I also think I will easily be able to fix the 7ft run I bought onto it it easily so the boys can have a great time in the summer! Anyway! I just wanted to advise anyone against buying a sharples hutch, I'm quite glad the hutch was so bad because now I've got one I think they will like even more! I've added a few pics below and one of the new hutch, it's not all set up yet but it's going to be a true piggie palace when it's finished! :D

Thanks for letting people know, really helpful and means others can avoid it.

Looking forward to hearing all about your piggies when you get them :)

I've been using a Country Wide sinlgle tier verision of the above hutch (6 foot by 2 foot) and my old boys loved charging around in it. It's well built with good quality timber. Just watch out for the edges of the wire mesh - some on my hutch were quite rough.

:) Hope your pigs enjoy their home when they arrive.

It looks lovely quality, although I would double check the wire at the bottom as it looks like chicken wire and may need replacing! I know @Bekki had some experience with bad quality wire recently so should be able to advise! It could just be me being a little over cautious!

Thanks for the advise guys! As I want to put the hutch outside when in summer I was a little worried about the chicken wire too, I reckon a rat or mouse could easily fit through the bottom! So I've bought some square wire stuff (don't know how to describe it really lol) and I think I'm going to replace it! Shouldn't be too hard, looks like it just stapled on! The wire on the top level seems ok but thanks for the heads up!

GothMummy, they are collecting it tomorrow and have said I can have a full refund :D

i bet that had been damaged in a warehouse somewhere, either via courier if it was delivered or somewhere else. I'd talk to the manufacturers directly and advise them this is unacceptable and see what you can get out of them then go back to the retailer and get your refund plus some vouchers for food or something if you can. if this was done after manufacture then its giving them a really bad image that its so poor, which is annoying for the company but then retailers need to be more considerate in what they sell and how too

on the plus side the new one look gorgeous

I'm glad you are getting a refund :) I had a wendy house from B&Q that had to be sent back because it was split and damaged, I think they get damaged in transit quite easily especially when the wood is not fantastic quality.

You could just put the square wire over the chicken wire for extra security.Nice hutch and lucky piggies

I'm glad you managed to get a refund ok, I had a nightmare with them when my XL Liberta turned up with cracks in the base :(
I tend to use Little Pet Warehouse for cages now (when they have their big ones in), their packaging is amazing! Lol.

I am so pleased they will be happy in their new cage. Can't wait for photos of them! :D xx
