I made the stupid mistake of believing the pet store, not checking myself, and ended up with a male and female instead of 2 females and had 2 healthy babies this morning. The adult male is an Abyssinian and the mommy is a smooth coated. I was wondering if abyssinians are born with hair that way or if it grows tufted as they grow? Or do I have 2 smooth coated piggies?

O dear!

Glad you had two healthy babies though :)

I have no idea about their coats I am afraid

They both look smooth coat although I thought abyssinian was a dominant gene mallethead

Glad the babies arrived safely. I'm assuming you've taken Daddy out?

They are absolutely gorgeous. Although, both are 'Smooth Coated cavies'. However, to produce an (pedigree) Abyssinian, both parents would be required to be (pedigree) Abyssinians - a cavy with tufty hair is not an Abyssinian. However, an (pedigree) Abyssinian is born with rosettes.

Pups - 'Golden, Golden Agouti and White Tri - colour Smooth Coated cavies'

I am sorry that you are another shop piggy victim, but glad that everything has gone well.

Your babies are both smooth coated. With guinea pigs, you never know what you get - like you, I started out as an unplanned "shop granny" with one baby being smooth and the other an aby cross like her mummy. Needless to say that I have gone strictly rescue since! We have had rescue sows on here giving birth to four completely different looking babies, and none looking like mummy!

This is the best website for sexing piggies of all ages. Please be aware that you will have to separate any male pups from mummy and sister at 3 weeks old to avoid the next round of babies. You can put any male babies with daddy to bolster the shock of the separation. Most males are pretty good with babies.

I am going to post a pic of the boar if anyone can tell me what name his color/coat would be. I was wondering if calling him Abyssinian was wrong since I know niether of them are pedigreed pigs. So if they are going to be tufted they are born that way then? Not that it makes any difference we deffinately wont be having any more now that I have learned to sex them.

And yes I separated the adults about a week or so ago, and have checked the babies and have one of each, is 3 weeks the latest the little boar should be separated?

Thanks for all the great replies!

Here is the new dad.....any takers on naming coat/hair type?

Some kind of agouti and white? Not sure which agouti though :{ possibly lemon or cinnamon. He is beautiful though xoxo

I'm sorry to hear about it... But on the upside the babies are absolutely adorable (and so is mommy and daddy) ;) No idea about coat/colour etc, just wanted to say they're cute :)

I got my aby from a pet shop and she was already pregnant, probably from a litter mate.
She gave birth to two babies, one aby, one smooth coat. They're born with the aby coat, yours are both smooth coat as far as my untrained eye can tell :)
congrats by the way!

Alright another question, (this is an awesome place to get all my first time piggie grandparent questions). My kids are dying to hold the babies and I have allowed them for just a few minutes at a time supervised......is this okay at this early stage or should we give them a couple of days, Flower(sow)doesnt seem to mind?

Babies can be handled for short bursts of time from the first day, provided they are healthy and doing well, of course. Best have them in a little cosy so they cannot suddenly wiggle and jump and always take them back as soon as mummy is not worried. Don't hold them for longer than they like. I am sure that you are allowing cuddling only under supervision, anyway!

If you can build a little baby-safe indoors run, your children will have LOTS of fun watching the babies discover the world with toilet rolls, small hurdles made from rulers, cardboard boxes, old towels etc. and lots of mad racing and popcorning once they are a few days old.

At which point have you separated the adults? If mummy has been with daddy until after the birth, you may have to brace yourself for another round of babies. Sows come into season within hours of giving birth in order to make up for the long pregnancies.

Yes definitely, I actually separated them a week or more ago because wasn't sure when they would arrive. The playpen idea is great my kids will get lots of laughs I'm sure, do I put them in by themselves or put the mom in with them?

With mum, please!

Have a look at our toys thread in the reference section for more cheap and easy ideas. We had lots of fun as children building little obstacles and watching the piggies play. Make sure that you have a snuggle corner as well in the run - you can always make a "tent" with an old dishcloth or a "car wash" curtain where you cut one end of a rag into strips.

In order to save the floor, you will need some pee-proof wipeable cover. Ideas and tips for cheap runs you can get in our housing section.
