I took on a rescue boar today with the intention of rehoming him.

He has terrible croaky breathing - really rattly and noisy. The lady said he had been like it since birth. He was in with lots of other pigs and they didn't have any breathing problems. Just him.

He's going to be going to the vets Monday. Does anyone have any ideas on why he could have always been like that?

He's 7 1/2 weeks old, not yet been weighed but a good size, not stunted I don't think.

Minx's sister Zelda had a URI when she was very little. It has left her with a wheeze which the vet said to expect as she was so young at the time. It doesn't sound as if it's as bad as your boy though. Hope the vet has some answers.

I had two pigs boarding last week, one of whom had very noisy/rattly breathing. It wasn't too loud but was still noticeable. Her owner said she had pneumonia as a youngster and has since had the noisy breathing despite being healthy now.

I have a few here with intermittent rattly breathing. One was Gwenny who as you know turned out to be a heart pig, another is on a trial of heart meds and the rattling has eased off. Elijah had slightly rattly breathing with his systemic fungal infection. Pandora seems a bit sensitive to something here, definitely an allergy, and she does the grumbly breathing once in a while too. Plenty of causes to investigate but it may just be "one of those things" again.

If he really has had it from birth I'd certainly look into heart and fungal first. It's also possible he aspirated milk or water as a very young pup and either developed an infection or it was just enough to damage his lungs a little, so could have originated from that...?

Lots to consider, good luck at the vets. xx

Tomorrow will be interesting.

I said he wasn't small but he is - he weight 460g - Dolly's babies are all at or about 400g and they are almost 5 weeks. He's 7 1/2.

He's the sweetest little thing- really fluffy - I hope he can be helped.

Isn't he a bit small for panacur and ivomec? I want to do them but worried about his size?

He should be ok on half the dose - 0.05ml Ivomec and 0.2ml Panacur - if you really feel it is needed, but if you're in any doubt wait to ask the vet.

I have to say he seems bright enough and happy. He doesn't seem 'unwell'

It's just this breathing. Mark will be able to tell me what's up i'm sure.

Right then Baby boar (now named Dickens) HAS been very poorly early in his life. He's only 7 1/2 weeks now!

It's damaged his lungs quite alot, he has areas of dry pluracy too as a result of this early infection.

His heart is GREAT and I have wormed him and mites treated him too.

It's going to stunt his growth and shorten his life too poor lad. It will get worse from time to time and can be managed with metacam. If hes ever off his food suspect Pneumonia and get him to the vets asap.

So it looks like he's going to be Cardiff Guinea pig rescues first sponsor pig.

Poor boy. He's in great hands now though. I'm sure his general condition will be tip top after some tlc from you, which hopefully will mean his lung problems are more manageable.

So, is this an official declaration of your status as a piggy recue lady (more commonly known as the crazy guinea pig woman)? :(|)

poor little lad, fingers crossed for him, one thing thats certain is that his life with you will be great, no matter how long it is.

It is that yes. I have a facebook page and a website under construction and plans for the shed! I am going to be a SMALL rescue for now, lets see how it goes.

OH and my friends have been calling me the crazy guinea pig lady for aaaaaaages! :))

It's going to be so nice to have someone close to share the load, though I won't send piggies your way until you're ready! You know where I am if you need any help.

Dickens is a lucky boy, no matter how long his life is, it's going to be a great one.

People have been calling me 'The guinea pig lady' for years - to my face - Lord alone knows what they really call me!

That's amazing you are setting up a rescue. Am glad Dickens has you to look after him.

Poor Dickens! At least, he will have a great home for as long as he lives!

Best of luck with your going rescue! At least you already have a support network to fall back on.
