hi i have had a baby guinea off logiebear on tuesday after we think his mummy died he is around 2 or 3wks old and weight was 186g since ive had him and feeding him every 4 hours with goats milk which he is now taking great and also eating solid food but not drinking water has yet but his weight is now 201g and is weeing with my help and pooing fine i have been giving him a small drop of gripe water after a few feeds as i find he gets a little windy in his tummy i have been rubbing his back and he is bringing some wind up but does anyone know of a easier way of getting it up?i am also massaging his tummy to help stop him from getting bloat,,,...i am very happy that i could help logiebear out as she does a fab job..

I suppose you are having to feed him through the night!
I have no experience of this problem with baby pigs.
However, what you are doing is what I and others do for adult pigs that have similar problems.
I am wondering why he should be getting this condition so I have to ask what exactly do you mean by "a little windy in his tummy"?
Another approach would be to encourage him to get exercise after being fed.
That should help improve matters, without having to give him Gripe Water.

i can feel little bubbles in his tummy like bubbles popping after he has fed

I only have experience with one baby, his mum came pregnant (petshop) & whilst his mum didn't die at this age he was eating dry food & veg & not feeding from her. I don't understand why you're feeding him goats milk when he will eat dry food & have you tried him with veg? Nor did i (or his mum) help him pee or poop at this age, at birth yes; i'm confused as to why he would need help :{

Can't help on the winding front as my baby pig had no problems with wind & was separated from mum at 3wks; fully independant of her.

I saw a one day old pig in a pet shop earlier this week and he or she was nibbling at the hay.
At his age your pig should be getting close to being removed from his mother. I assume it is a boar.

I wonder if the concern is more his weight rather than age? Even at 2-3 weeks, 186g is on the lighter side of what I'm aware of for pigs of that age. (Maybe I'm wrong, my 3 week olds were closer to 300g).

I wonder if offering Critical Care on a spoon would help improve the baby's condition (as additional feeds to solid food to help weight gain) without upsetting his tummy as much. Either that, or the bran mash posted by Tracy in Food could help....?

i have been giving baby goats milk because he is so malnourished and dehydrated and i was worried that he was close to death,he was eating little solid foods but not weeing with out help but is now,and he wasn't drinking water via the bottle he hardly ate any veg and was also infected with mites which left bald patches all over his face and neck and all up his legs,i used the goats milk like i did in another under weight baby that was not gaining weight very well so i was also supplementing him with goats milk for a week as extra nutrition,with this little guinea name jack he has really come on with a little extra nutrition from the goats milk and has even just started to eat a little hay the first time ive seen him doing it the poor little thing is like a skeleton,i feel that adding a little goats milk until he can manage to eat normally and drink on his own with out losing weight was and is the right thing to do as it clearly at the minute as helped him i will continue with the goats milk for another 2 days until i am happy he is out of the woods 3 wks is an approx its poss he is 2 wks or a little younger due to his size its very hard to say how old he is xx

we also don't know what mum died of or when she died,as these came from a breeder and they were not kept in the greatest conditions judging by the smell and colour of there hair and nails but this is because the breeder who had them was herself very very unwell and was not done intentionally

Try not to make him too dependent on syringe/hand feeding, it can be difficult to break the pattern.

I would recommend that you try to increasingly mix the goats mild with hay based Critical Care and to try and encourage him onto a normal diet; the more hay he eats the less windy he'll hopefully get. His poor guts are probably not used to all the rich food you are giving him, which could be the reason for his windiness.

While he is still on the small side, he can pick up weight with a normal diet as well.
