Hi there,

I have just got two new guineas after my previous lovely girls Wiggles and Nibbles died just two days apart. They have been checked over by my vet and he noticed that one eye slightly smaller than the other (she also has ruby eyes).
This afternoon I picked her up and found that this eye was glued shut, although there was only a small amount of discharge.
I have washed it, but should I be doing anything else?
I would be really grateful for any advice.

Lynne

Hi Lynne, welcome to the forum. :)

Could a hay poke/injury have caused the eye to close? The ruby eyed piggies do appear to have eyes that are more sensitive to light, I'm thinking if she's scratched or poked it she would want to protect and cover the eye by closing it (whereby a dark eyed pig tends to squint rather than completely close the eye).

I would not be inclined to try forcing the eye open, keep bathing at least 2-3 times a day with cooled boiled water, but I do recommend seeing a vet or rodentologist to help your new girl if there is no improvement within the next day.

Thanks. I pretty much thought that would be the answer but having lost my previous two guineas within two days of each other I suppose I'm lacking a bit of confidence in my own jusgement.

I don't think she could have injured the eye, but I have already made an appointment to see the vet tomorrow. I will keep bathing her eye until then.

Thanks again for the advice.
Lynne
