Baby pig passed away today. She was fine this morning, took a piece of tomato and ran off with it.When I cleaned them out and they had floor time she didn’t come out for the plate of grass which I thought was strange and when I put her back in her cage She went to the corner and just sat there.I rang the vets and they said to bring her in at 3 but if she got worse then to come in earlier. At about half one my mums friend called me from upstairs and said one of your Guinea Pigs is lying on their side.I ran downstairs and she was kicking her legs so I got her out the cage and put her in a blanket on the settee where she kept trying to get up but couldn’t.I threw some clothes on and went straight to the vets but Unfortunatly they said she had already passed.I'm so upset, I don’t know what happened.Shed been battling a uri for a week but had never gone off her food or anything. The vet said the uri must have taken hold of her.

HUGS!

It sounds like Baby has either suffered strokes or multiple organ failure. Guinea pigs will kick reflexively in the last stages of it; we call it 'running to the Rainbow Bridge'. Thankfully they are mostly out of it by then; it is much more distressing for the owner to watch.

Please do not feel guilty; it was simply her day to leave. Seeing the vet wouldn't have changed anything. She would have likely passed on the way there due to the extra stress.

It is always very upsetting when you lose a piggy without warning; you have both the shock and the pain of the loss to cope with, as well as the usual soul searching to find something that you have done wrong. Please rest assured that you have done everything you should and there isn't anything you could have done to prevent or stop it.

Guinea pigs are frail small animals when it comes down to it; they can downhill frighteningly quickly. It is always hardest when it is the first time you have come face to face with it. Dying is much more physical than the concept of drifting gently away in your sleep - in fact, even most human deaths don't happen like that, either. :(

Be sad, but please do not feel bad about yourself!

Oh so sorry to hear that Baby pig has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Sometimes the call is too much for them to resist. She is out of pain and back to full health and is playing zoomies and popcorning with all her new friends. Have a hug cos you need one!

Oh I’m so sorry that you’ve lost Baby today. Huge hugs xx She will have been comforted by your presence as she trotted off to the Bridge. Popcorn free lovely Baby xx

Thank you for your comment about Bingley. I am so sorry for your loss too - they are such small things but they have such a big hold on you. I will toast both our piggies with a glass of wine as well!

It comes and goes - but we were just talking over supper about how much Bings would have liked the veggies we were having and we choked up again. Hope all is well with you - it just takes time I think.

Yes I agree, it’s worse when something reminds you of them xx

So sorry to hear about this. But I agree, there is nothing you could have done.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful piggy. Watching them pass is really distressing, I am really sorry and you never get used to it, but as Wiebke says they are out of it by then and unaware so please try not to dwell on the end. The end of someone of somepigs life does not define their life - rather the love in it and Baby had a life full of love.

Huge hugs

Sleep well little one

RIP Baby Pig
