i had one of my rescue guinea pigs go into labour earlier she has had two babies and still massive lump one side of her stomach and i think she has more babies in there, she is around two and we dont know if she had babies before, one of the babies (the black one) was laying down when i found him and i picked him up but he is weak when i went back few hours later he cant even stand he just keeps falling over, i say his been squashed by adult but others are ok so maybe its to do with his birth as mum struggled to get him out, he does seem a little streched :-(
the vet told me to monitor mum until morning but i dont think the little baby will make it and his so lovly, both babies seem very small comapred to other newborns

if they are looking weak please dont hesitate to start hand feeding them... i use kitten milk... as every hour passed the chances of them survivng are slimmer....
they should start taking about 0.2ml of milk every 2 hours...
and a glucose or diralite water solution to stop dehydration

i have another female who has had babies and i held her on my lap and him to her nipple and he would not feed, he is just not in best form i think it was his birth as mother couldnt get him out birth canal

p.s.
they look alot healthier than my little thorn..
he couldnt walk untill he was 5 days old really...
if you want to read my thread about him... goes in to detail about feeding and stuff...
its in health and illness- hand rearing baby...?

please dont lisen to that s * * t
theres always some thing you can do...
i brought thorn back to life... he was born not breathing...
when i brought mom and two babies in for a check at 1 day old i was told to let him drift away... (mom had badly attacked him and he had never fed off mom as shes rejected him)
but i perservered getting up every 1.5 hours in the night to feed him... and here he is going strong at 9 days now... its hard graft... but try and get some water in them please... thats a start... then go get some kitten milk A.S.A.P... :)
sorry to sound a bit extreme... but its something I'm very passionate about...
have a little nosey poke at my thread... you'll be able to read exactly what ive been doing... good luck...

p.s. as far as mom having lumps on her sides still... lets hope there not babies.. because they will most definatly be still born by now... :(
i feel sorry for you, youve been mislead by your vet slightly... a guinea pig labor should bever last more than and hour and half MAX!
did you see any placenta's at all...?
i just hope shes not retaining and placenta's or babies and shes just a bit bloted...

where are you based...?
if your close to me i will be more than happy to come and help you out...

i just went to check on him and I'm afraid the little one has died i picked him up to see if breathing at all but he was gone :-(

poor little baby was only alive a few hours , his brother/sister seem ok very tiny but not weak like he was , i wonder if he was sqashed by mum or if it was birth because she seem so distressed

I may not have had experience in guinea pig midwifery, but every animal that I have attended the birth of feeds after a few minutes, maybe max of an hour depending purely on if they received nutrients from the placenta before birth started. Why would the babies not feed for 12 hours?? I apologize if this is correct but it seems a little mad to me that a baby can be born ready to move and run, but not feed for as long as that.

I would be assisting feeding if the baby is not able to get any from his mum, if its having trouble moving about then chances are it will have problems finding the teat. I have helped a few newborns with this, or given them milk to give them the strength and the chance of life they deserve.

Fingers crossed for little one and mum, hope there are no more babies

Omg! I was really hoping he'd pull through. I hope your okay, the baby is in a good place now, he is strong and no doubt he's thanking you for your efforts. Be proud you did all you could that's the main thing. (hug) :(

Your babies look cute! I am sorry that lost one; it is always so heartbreaking to see one tumble into only to leave it again.

Have you weighed them? Is it suckling now from both teats? Is mummy OK?

Any baby under 60g should get help with feeding.
Here are tips with hand feeding pups from the best medical website for guinea pigs: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html#pups

It can take up to a day for the milk bar to get going, and babies are provided for that; your vet was right in that (but not the way he was saying it). Babies should try to drink within a very few hours of being born. They won't start to put on weight until the second day or so. Please weigh them daily for the first two weeks to make sure that they are thriving.

i have started feedng the baby with kitten milk he has taken around 1ml over two feeds but is getting worse as for mum i am taking her back to vet as i think she is dying, she has large stomach like babies are stuck and wet all round her mouth like dribbling and wont eat

oh gosh, you poor thing this must be so upsetting for you, take care of yourself too xx

I'm so sorry for the poor piggy mum, I do hope she will be all right but this really doesn't sound good.

If you do lose her then the very best of luck in bringing up the little ones.

Everything crossed here!
