Hey everyone..I’m hoping for some advice about my 2 and a bit year old piglet, Winthrop.
Win has always been a super fast scoffer so when he started struggling to eat I was quick to notice. Straight to the vets who examined him and said he was fine and his teeth looked good apart from his front tooth which was quite crooked. The vet recommended taking the edge off slightly so it would grow back evenly. Having experienced the loss of my pig, Ron through a vets dental incompetence, I very firmly stated that I did not want them cutting away. The vet agreed and do Winthrop had his toothy trimmed.
We left the vets, got home and immediately Win went to eat. He grabbed some grass then dropped it. My heart sank.
Back to the vets first thing. I demanded that he look at his molars properly. Low and behold his tongue was trapped with his teeth growing across and also spurs digging in.
Winthrop was operated on that afternoon. When I went to pick him up, pretty much straight away ( I trust no one with my poorly pigs ) the nurse told me he was alert but hadn’t eaten yet. I was desperate to get him home, settled and fed, so I grabbed my pig and headed home. He was so hungry but couldn’t bite down on his food. Looked in his mouth and his incisors were none existent. Unbelievable. I told him not to take them all away. Back to smush as I call it. ( I feed Winthrop every 3 hrs, including through the night. He has cc, nugget mash and fresh vegetable smush )
To cut an already long story short..Winthrop has not eaten yet. It’s been nearly 2 weeks. I took him back, yet again and the vet was dismissive. Weighed him and my little lad had gained weight thankfully. I left with emeprid and was told to come back in a week..
His little teeth are coming through and he’s able to pick stuff up big just can’t quite get it in his mouth. He’s so sad, I feel so guilty. All the vets round here are absolutely useless. It’s only a guineapig to them. Well he’s my boy and I want to help him anyway I can. Please, any advice would be gladly received.

Hi and welcome

Can you please add your country, state/province or UK county to your account details so we can tailor any advice to what is relevant and available where you are. You can access your account details and location via clicking on your username on the top bar.
We have members and enquiries from all over the world, very different conditions and access to knowledgeable vets. Thank you!
Any recommendations will depend on your location. Unfortunately guinea pig dentals are not an area most vets are familiar or experienced with.

Please continue syringe feed, as well as feeding grated veg and mushed pellets and porridge oats, if your piggy is taking them.
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

I am linking in @furryfriends (TEAS) for you; she is the one that is experienced with caring for guinea pigs with dental problems.

Thank you, will get straight on it. I’m very grateful for reply x

I sadly lost my Enoch through the same issue as he had other complications but my vet who I trust completely didn’t touch the incisors!

Where are you located? Are you in the UK? The best dental vet in the country is Simon Maddock at the cat and rabbit clinic in Northampton

I’m so sorry for your loss, it’s a heartbreaking pain x I’m in the uk, North Lincolnshire. Far away from Simon I’m afraid. I’ve heard he’s amazing x

Thank you. He was only 2.5 but my vet felt his issue was genetic.

I’m sorry that you can’t get to Simon. I can’t either as I’m all the way in Lancashire x

Bless his little paws x I’m thinking Winthrop may have these troubles genetically. His back story is a sad one, his mum and sister have passed away. Luna, his mum was not much older than her first borns. Winthrop was the only one born to her what I can only guess is her second pregnancy. He was a surprise to us bless him. Came down for a brew, nipped in to check on the herd and there he was. Daft little he is x
Thanks babe. It’s shocking how little vets actually know regards pigs and other small animals x

Aw bless his little family. It is shocking how little vets know about small animals. Thankfully my vet is pretty good and I trust her but some can be shockingly bad :( x

If you would like your piggy to be seen by Simon Maddock, we offer temporary places, here at TEAS. I really think it would be a good idea to get her seen by Simon.

We don’t make a formal charge for boarding, but just ask that living expenses are covered. Here is the link to our Facebook page. The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary (for guinea pigs with extra needs)
