Help! Ok been to the vet again he was pressing Amy's body and he was clearly hurting her as she was crying, anyway I explained she was still not eating pellets by herself but did eat a tiny bit of celery this morning. Upon examination he said he could give more injections same as yesterday then went out the room came back and said he had read his colleagues notes and after examination thought she had become slightly bloated however gained 30g last night in weight but then said I dont think the intestines are working do you understand, and said I think it might be best to euthanase her as we need to be kind to her but then said look I'm not an exotic vet and if you want we can try more injections but if she's not eating or toilet ing by by tomorrow then we will euthanise her So I said let's try the injections please, I asked if she was in pain he said no I said I had read I should withhold salad does this count as eating by herself he said yes but she needs to toilet he then said give her lettuce if you want (what!) I was thinking please help should I give her longer or trust him by the way I've booked her in for Thursday not tomorrow but I don't know if to cancel ??

I think you need to find a more experienced guinea pig vet as it sounds like they're unsure what to do. It sounds like they've suggested you withhold food, but also need to euthanize as she's not eating?

Try ringing around you area to find an exotic/ guinea pig specialist. Or try the Vet Locator here on the forum to find a vet close to you.

Could you explain what her problem is? I'm struggling to understand what her symptoms are. It sounds to me like she's not eating, but is she eating anything? Is she trying to eat at? Is she struggling to eat? It could be a teeth problem.

Whereabouts in Norfolk are you? There is a piggy savvy vet that comes up on the locator in Norwich. I think I would be looking for a second opinion.

If she isn't eating though then you will need to syringe feed her, there are instructions in the Health section stickies.

Amy stopped eating completely Sunday and didn't move at all for 24hours after vet visit syringe feed she started moving around and ate a bit of celery today(day3) Amy suffered diaorehea Sunday night but 3 tiny lumpy stools today or last night she won't eat any dry food or doesn't seem interested in hay and had a little celery I'm in south Norfolk but will try n find out which savy vet your talking about, thank you

Check the recommended vet locator on here and contact the exotic vet in norfolk- you need a second opinion. Keep syringe feed and watering her, if her stomach is gassy, bloated and hollow when you tap it then you can withold veg and give her 0.3ml of babies woodwards gripe water every couple of hours until the gas disperses. I would phone them asap and get an emergency appointment of possible- she needs to see a piggy savvy vet x

Brilliant thank you I will take her to see that vet I am constantly syringe feeding/watering she had a jab of anti inflammatory for the slight bloating thank you everyone you have been great help I'm not taking her back to that vet I will go to the one you have recommended thank you.

Best of luck with her! I hope the vet with more guinea pig experience can give you some guidance for her. In my experience it really does pay to have a vet with experience with guinea pigs. They simply are not the same animal as a dog or cat and trying to extrapolate from other animals can lead inexperienced vets to make mistakes in their care.

Thank you she is being so good accepting syringe all the time I'm so proud of her today I feel she's trying to help herself get better!

All the best! I hope that the new vet can help.

definitely different vet time... the other one sounds like he's not sure what to do so wants to do euthanasia instead of investigate. i wouldn't be wanting to give up on her yet if she still has a general quality of life & she seems to have picked up a bit since you have been syringe feeding/watering her.

i would ask the different vet about painkillers as this can help with her appetite too - a sign of pain can be lack of appetite, whether its her mouth/teeth/digestive system pain they all will reduce her intake significantly, so this needs to be addressed to improve the others - its a bit of a vicious circle with guineas, when one problem occurs it often sets off other problems which in turn can have a negative impact on the original problem :hmm:

try hand feeding various types of hay to keep her teeth & fibre intake ticking along & encourage her to eat non gassy foods.
woodwards gripe water £3 from the baby aisle in tesco or asda will help to break down any big air bubbles & disperse them if she is at all bloated.
(trapped wind is painful &unsettles the stomach-enough to stop me eating-i often reach out for the gripe water bottle for myself-it works wonders:tu:)

it usually takes around 24hrs for the digestive system to turn input into poops, so give her at least 24hrs to show signs of poops if her eating has been minimal. you'll probably find that the poops will be hard/soft/mis-shapen/holey etc until the gut has sorted itself out, the more she eats the more normal type poops will appear.

Good luck at the vets, hope you get a decent one. fingers & paws all crossed her for a diagnosis, then a full & speedy recovery :D xx
