Gizmo is booked in for 03.40pm tomorrow for his check up, hes been on the septrin and metacam for a month now and he has been on the cytease since last week, following his bladder issues. He has been squeak free for 5 days and today they both had a bath ready to show themselves off at the vets! rolleyes As when i rung they said 'oh yes Gizmo we all know him and his great personality!' :(|)

He has done many wees today and one or two of them has ended in a small squeak. 8... He was doing so well for the past 5 days, just have to wait and see what the vet says tomorrow. Again their is no blood/grit in his urine and i have been testing daily, i have noticed though that since being on the cystease the protein levels have dropped in his urine and they seem to be the same as Joey's as i tested his too for comparison.

Please send Gizmo positive vibes for tomorrow. :)p

I'm not sure about this, I read On Peter Gurney's site that he believes there is a link between protein and Uti's! How would you lower the protein levels without medication?

Good luck tomorrow xx

Sam I have been practically living there lately!

Good luck for tomorrow.

Thanks!

Lisa since ive joined with them and started taking the boys it seems like I'm a regular there too!

I hope that he dosent have to another xray, as its seems odd that its reoccurring though, nothing in his urine today and ive tested it 3 times. One of which he did squeak when doing and again nothing showed up.

I wish he would just get better. :(

Just come back from the vets and its good news!

He said that all feels normal and not inflammed like last time. Gizmo has got to continue with the metacam as he felt his back legs and said that they are still quite stiff and thats why he sometimes 'bunny hops' because of his arthritis. He also said his arthritis is adding to the problem as this can hurt him when he is trying to wee. He can come off the septrin now and just keep it at hand just incase, he said that Gizmo has chronic cysistis and to continue to syringe him water 3 times a day with the cystease.

Gizmo also done a big wee before going into the vets and had a empty bladder for the vet, so now he has been squeak free for 6 days now, apart from once or twice yesterday which was a great improvement from before.

Gizmo is very happy that he can come off the septrin as he hates it!

Really good news! You must feel sooooo happy and relieved! :))

I don't think any urine is meant to have protein in it? If it does, it's an indicator of a UTI or kidney infection (the swelling of the ureters and urethra caused by the infection leaves blood and protein traces). I might be wrong, but I don't think protein is usually present...

My vet confirmed that in human urine sticks very low levels of protein can be present from guinea pig wee when using the sticks, but like you said high levels or moderate levels can indicate infection such as a UTI.

So when using human test sticks be aware that very small traces of protein may show up, but if large or moderate the an infection is most likely.

I wonder why the human sticks pick up protein for guinea pig wee? I suppose a guinea pig sample is never a "clean" catch-likely to have poop and food traces in the sample too, so it's not 100% accurate.

I wonder if cranberries help piggie's urinary health? I bought some rolled grass treats from excel which are meant to help against UTIs, but they're quite expensive- £1.99 for 4). Cranberries work wonders for humans...then again, the sugar could be a little high for piggies?

I'm not sure why human urine test sticks show up a little protein, the vet didnt say just told me to be aware of it when home testing. But since Gizmo has been on the cystease he hasn't had any protein in his urine at all. :)

I do think that cranberries have benefits for piggys just like us humans as you can give unsweetened cranberry juice to pigs. Also you can give them fresh cranberries and I'm sure they are in the low calcium range too so perfect for piggys. As long as they are fresh there shouldn't be any added sugar.

I did read on guinea lynx that one owner gave 2-3 frozen cranberries (obviously defrosted first) each day to their pigs who was prone to cystitis and it never came back!

You can buy gerty guinea pig carrot&cranberry food, my two have tried it and they likes it, so i mix a little in with their food as i like them to have some cranberries, as i was unable to find any frozen or fresh cranberries to try them on.

:)

Paws crossed for Gizmo, Ringo and Squeak are at the vets tomorrow just for a check up. They struggle to keep still for me though never mind the Vet so it could be interesting! :o
