So over the weekend I was in pets at home looking for some Christmas presents for my 2 lovelies and while I was there, I took a quick peek at the guinea pigs. I noticed one of the babies was sneezing and it's whole nose was covered in thick crust. I promptly went over the the till to inform a member of staff and I was told that someone will be over shortly. So I waited and waited so that I could point the poor pig out and had to go back over to ask if anyone was coming a further two times. I was waiting for 35 minutes before someone finally come over and the store wasn't even busy.

I explained to the member of staff and she said 'oh yes, I'll put him in the back'. I asked whether he was going to get vet treatment and she said that it's just stress related, to which I stated that he still needs to see a vet. She said yes in a very snotty tone. I decided to walk around the other shops and go back to the store later on as I had a feeling that the guinea pig would be put back in the cage with the rest once I had left and the my horror he was! I complained in store again and they told me he will get vet treatment but didn't have an explanation for why he was put back in the same cage as the others.

I feel awful for leaving him but due to recently having to leave my previous job and my new job is poorly paid, things are a bit of a struggle at the moment, but now I am filled with guilt and should have taken him.

I emailed pets at home with the complaint and they replied with no confirmation of the pig getting vet treatment but instead have offered me vouchers! I have emailed back several times and my issues around vet care keep getting dismissed and now I don't know what to do. I just hope the poor little man is okay

Also, I thought I would add that in another local p@h store, they have a vet inside.. I have pointed out a sick guinea pig before and they took him straight upstairs to the vet but this other branch does not have an on site vet

Oh no, that sounds awful, but well done for being so persistent.
Sometimes you can only do so much, and it sounds like you did everything possible.
Part of the problem is that s long as people keep supporting stores like P@H this will continue to be an issue.
I am sure lots of stores have concerned and educated staff, but it sounds like the one you visited didn't on that particular day.
Hopefully they have made note of your complaint and the little chap has received proper treatment now.

Oh I do hope so. I guess I expected more from the email that they sent and was hoping for some kind of confirmation that they were investigating or that the guinea pig has recieved the care but no, just the offer of pesky vouchers!

Make a comment on their Facebook page. They hate bad publicity. Or tweet about it. I'd make a bloody nuisance of myself. I ended up with Woody, one of my rainbow bridge bunnies for much the same reason. I didn't want another bunny but due to a complete lack of care, compassion and action by the staff in my local P@H, I ended up with a new bunny in my lunchbreak. Boy was I angry - but that was before widespread use of the internet so I couldn't moan to all and sundry unfortunately.

First off, I would go on there Facebook & embarrass them. Go back to the store & see if they have put him back in, and then if a rescue is agreeable take him straight to them.
I had the same problem with another shop, in the end they took them them to another shop.

I no longer go in stores that sell animals I get my supplies from a horse feed suppliers or the local garden centre.

In the past I have had to inform staff that the rabbits had no hay or water on several occasions. They always rolled out the same excuse that they were just about to see to them :hb:

I also emailed their head office on a coupe of occasions.

I now just avoid going in there.

Pictures pictures pictures I cant stress this enough if you have pictures of the animals that are sick thats proof and they cant deny that if you have picture evidance that they denied treatment for illness or injury its against the five freedoms of animal care and become's a police/RSPCA matter Its about time P@H started looking after there "stock" ugh.

You are very right and I'm gutted I didn't think of this while at the store. I am kicking myself now.

I did recieve an email from a different email address (must be someone higher in the compaby) saying that the complaint has been past on to them and is being investigated

My sister got a rabbit from them for her daughter and it turned out it had ringworm and had passed it on to her daughter!
