Bad Eye And Sniffly Nose

Hi Guys. I decided to ask on the forum about this because you’re all so lovely and helpful.

Last night, I check all the piggies and they were all fine. This morning, when I woke up, Rocket was sneezing loads and has an awful gunky and leaky eye. I’m not really sure how this has happened but his eye looks really sore and is quite sunken almost? I’m so confused. We do have hay for them to sleep in and we have recently tried to move them into Timothy hay rather than the regular pets at home one as it’s much better for them, but I did that last week and there’s been no problem. We had this with our other piggie ages ago but he only had a sniffly nose and no leaky eye. Help?

Please have the eye seen by a vet today, if possible; it rather looks like an non-ulcerating eye injury or something sutck under a lid. Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly, so the sooner you have it seen, the easier and quicker it heals.

I would also have the sniffles checked to make sure that the respiratory system is not involved. You can pursue other avenues (like a sensitivity to hay dust, dry radiator/air conditioning, perfumed skin products or air fresheners etc.) only after you have made sure that it is not a respiratory infection.

My little Delilah had the same thing, really red eye that was sunken in, then a short while later her sneezing turned into quite a gunky nose. She had quite a nasty respiratory infection, she was eating ok but became quite lethargic. Luckily our vet saw us about an hour after I phoned them up and shes fine now after some eye drops and baytril.

Well, we have an appointment booked in at the vets tomorrow night as they can’t see us any time before then. His eye has cleared up now, we wiped it with some sterilised water because he went to sleep and his eye crusted togehter. We only wiped it a little bit so he can see. I think it might have been a hay poke as it’s fine now. We are still popping to the vets tomorrow to check his sniffly nose anyways xx

You will still need to have the eye checked as damage is often visible only with the special dye that vets use. All the best for tomorrow!

We will still be getting that checked too. It does still look a bit sore but its always better to get it checked. We are going to stock up on fleeces before we go to the vets tomorrow as we are going to replace all hay bedding while his eye is sensitive and sore. There are still plenty of hay racks but we’re going to stop them from getting in the hay by replacing it will fleece and cozies. It might mean a lot more washing but I’m willing to do so to make sure they’re ok. They really enjoy the fleece that I already have in there so I think they’ll all be very happy about the change lol. At the moment, I’ve put a few old microfibres towels in there - just for today - so that he can’t hurt his anymore x

Oh yes, that looks infected. With sneezing too it's potentially secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection and needs a vet visit. Antibiotics may be needed (either by mouth or drops or both.)
