Last week my guinea pig Junior had a bad eye, it was red, runny and receding a bit. So I took him to the vets on tuesday (I moved house about two weeks ago to the Melton mowbray area & this vet not very far away was recommended to me) they were very good with him, checked him over and spent ages looking into his bad eye. We weren't sure if it was because of an injury or the vet said it could be conjunctivitous but he was unsure as said it looked too red to be conjunctivitous. He gave me Fucithalmic drops to put in Juniors eye twice a day, if no improve after 7days come back as it could be something else or if it improves use the drops for 10days. After the first day his eye had improved alot, it seemed to keep getting better. However, yesterday his other eye started going bad (exactly the same as the other 1 started) so I thought it must be conjunctivitous so started putting the drops in both eyes. Today both eyes are runny/crusty, although the redness has gone down he seems to be sneezing & coughing an awful lot and has a slight runny nose. Now I'm worried it might be something else :... like a URI? He's still eating well, playing and popcorning so don't know if I'm just being paranoid :(
Any advice is very much appreciated,
Rachel x

I weighed him on Tuesday he was 1,004g and today 976g so has lost a bit of weight :( he is still eating though. Really wish the vets was open today :( the vets i've been using is appoinment only aswell so I will have to phone first thing tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment :...

Not sure what to suggest. Have you held him up to your ear and listened to his chest?
The runny nose is worrying. I would get him to a vet as soon as you can.

Get well soon Junior. xx>>>

Thank you all, i read the link :)
I tried getting him to the emergency vets today, you have to leave a message then the on-duty vet will get back to you. But no one got back to me :( i left two messages (four hours apart) incase the first didn't work. So i'll take him first thing tomorrow & sit in the vets until someone will see him.
I'm pretty certain is it a URI now, hes had some pepper, carrot, grass, dandilions and I mushed some pellets up for him & he ate all that, so at least thats a good sign :) x

Hope it all goes well tomorrow, poor Junior. Let us know how he gets on, hope he gets well soon.

Sorry I missed this yesterday, not too well atm.

Conjunctivitis can be a sign of a brewing URI so I'm very glad you are getting him to a vet, hopefully a quick course of ABs will sort it.

Fingers crossed for you and Junior. I know things must still be raw, big hugs.

The vets saw him straight away this morning, which was very good of them. They think Juniors original eye problem is seperate to his new respiratory infection. Basically his original eye problem was likely to have been caused by an injury because the dye showed damage/ulcer, his first drops cleared that up and his eye was fine but then because he probably had a low immune system, he was vunrable and caught an infection.
He had two injections at the vets and i've got 0.2ml of baytril to give him twice a day. If he doesn't start showing signs of improvement within a day take him back to the vets, he seems to have purked up a bit already. I had to bribe him with Parsley to be my friend again rolleyes
Thanks for all your advice/well wishes x>>
