a couple of months ago Dudley developed a bit of a limp from one of his back legs. We guesssed he had probably caught it jumping into his old cage.
After a couple of days I took him to the vets. She had a feel of his legs/feet/back etc to check for breaks but couldn't find anything but when she put him on the floor his foot was slightly sticking out.
She said it seemed like a sprain so gave me some Metacam to give him to help if it was painful.

I done this for a few days and it seemed to get better. Since then he now has a C&C cage so he doesnt have to jump and everything went back to normal.

Today I have got up and notice when he runs about he is not weight bearing on the same foot again. Please can anyone give any advice as to what to do or what it could be as its really upsetting me as I have done everything to try and stop this happening again.
I have had him on my lap and had a squeeze all over his foot and leg and there is no squaeking to say he is in pain :...

They can run around/popcorn and bump into things......... i wonder if he's done this?
Check for any little cuts/missing bits of fur...... if you're at all uncertain it would be best for a vet to give him a check over or even an xray.
Is he having regular vegetables with Vitamin C ?

HEALING WHEEEEEEEEEEEKS FOR DUDLEY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

He is always eating lots of veg so has plenty of vitamin C. yes I suppose so, I just feel so helpless as he can't tell me whats a matter :-(
I'll see how is tonight but it may have to be another vets trip but I have a feeling they will tell me the same as last time

Love maybe it's time for a second opinion then?
ahhhhh it's so difficult to know isn't it......... they do love to boing around their cages! Let's hope he's just had a little knock and all will be ok in a day or so :)

Dudley boy stop worrying the heck outta your mummy! wheeeky loves and get better boy XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

i did mean to say too that i think it's great that you've noticed this....... you're being a really great mummy for noticing x)x)x)

Keep us updated....... i'm off to bed now (need to do some overnight feeding and need some sleep!) but i'll be checking to see how things a going :)

HUGS for you too XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

If you are sure there is no break , then Light Massager 3-4 time a day will stimulate the blood supply and also keep the joint active !

I think now is the time to go back to the vets for a through examination An X ray this will tell you if there is a break (healing or not) and a through exam should be able to determine whether there is anyhing else that may be causing the problem such as arthritis or bone deformity or infection.

Is he geting his full quota fo Vitamin C - a deficinecy shows as scurvy which can affect their imbs/mobility. Perhaps you can detail what diet/pellets/veg he gets on a daily basis to determine if he needs extra vitamins

Is your vet cavy savvy? If you can let us know the nearest big town to where you live we can perhpas find one who specailises in guinea pigs.

he gets daily carrots, romain lettuce, celery, cucumber and brocilli.

I live in Red Lpodge and currently use aquarius vets in Soham but can do Newmarket, Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, mildenhall and surrounding villages

He is still walking about on it fine its but its sticking out slightly from his body and when he runs he hops on it. Everything else about him is fine, hes eating and drinking normally and still wants a good fuss

Given the requirement for a second opinion and the symptoms you describe, I would say the most cost effective second opinion you can get would be Simon Maddock at Cat and Rabbit Dunston Northampton. I know it's a bit of a drive - but Simon is very thorough, very cavy savvy, will do Xrays there and then, will presecribe off-license and will ulitmately save you having to make 2-3 visits to another less cavy savvy vet to get a definitivie diagnosis and treatment.

If you can't travel the distance, tillythepig (RSPCA West Suffolk) who is based on Mildenhall, uses Eastgate Vet's with branches in Bury St Edmunds, mildenhall & Thetford, - Sarah Cole has an interest in small animals and Nicki is interested in orthopaedics.

Thank you that Pebble :) as soon as mildenhall opens I will give them a call to get him over there today if possible, il keep you updated on his progress xx

Quick update. Dudley's been to the vets tonight for a second opinion on his leg/foot. After a very thorough examination Andrew( eastgate vets in mildenhall) thinks outs a knee problem, possibly something that may have been caused when he previously hurt it which may/ will flair up ever so. Often. Either a sprain/tendon or ligament. He didn't want to xray yet as after lots of prodding and wiggling the leg/knee he felt confident of what it was.
He's prescribed rimadyl tablets to have a quarter of one twice a day for 5 days and said Dudley needs to rest.

Just given him his first dose which was fun, liquid was much easier to disguise so any tips would be greatly appreciated

I will keep you updated on his progress xx
