Hi All, i got my 3 guinea pigs about 3 months ago (3 sisters) and one is long haired, i have been brushing her each day however today i noticed something that wasnt there yesterday like a mat of something on the hair by her bum it looks wet or sticky, i tried to remove it with some guinea pig grooming wipes but i couldnt as she kept screeching an i was worried about upsetting her. Also the guinea in question ‘mandy’ absolutely hates me picking her up she is very of her own mind and she goes wild when i hold her she just doesnt like it and prefers to go about her business, has anyone got any advice how i can remove this? She is very very difficult to handle for more than a few seconds. The other 2 are fine being handled dont really understand it. I Really dont want to stress her out. Thanks in advance any advice would be much appreciated xx

Do you have fleece in your cage? It's possible that she could have sat on some pee or something and gotten her bum wet and matted. Make sure when you take her out that their is no loud sounds or other animals around. She might be very anxious so give her some time to calm down. Clean her very gently. It's very hard to hold a scared guinea pig but the more she gets used to you the better. My guinea pig is like this and I usally take him out in his fleece hidey, that way I can keep him from running away while or clean and hold him. Make sure that the cage is dry so she doesent get wet. I understand completly because my piggie is EXACTLY like this.:D🤩

Thank you so much! no i dont have fleece in the cage do they prefer fleece if so i will get some! i will definately try that they currently have a straw hidey i spose i could use that maybe? I'm thinking to just cut the mat out but be extra careful because she will scream the place down if i try and brush it out lol xx

I have a long haired piggy who frequently gets matted fur around her bottom.
I have a small pair of scissors which I use to keep her bum fur short and snip out ant masted bits.
Priscilla can be a bit of a diva too.

thank you, I'm just worried as I'm really trying to build a trusting relationship with her that she might withdraw from me even more because i know that she will not be happy when i try to do it, because i tried earlier today she is currently sulking 😓xx

You could try luring her into a piece of 4" pipe or a log tunnel and putting some of her favourite food at the head end while you sneakily snip at the bum end.

Have you tried the piggy whispering techniques to show her you want to be friends? They are very good. The most useful one is always talk as you approach the cage/hutch as a predator is always silent. You may find that you don't want anyone around when you do some of the techniques as you feel a bit of a fool. You aren't though as you are talking guinea pig!

I talk to my pigs more than I talk to my humans!
