I happened to have some time on my own today, so decided to go to a garden centre and have a look around, As always i ended up in the pet department.
As i walked into the area they keep the furriers in the smell overwhelmed me, the cages where grotty and the animals looked down right unhappy, I was just thankful there was no guineas or it would have been a expensive visit.

This pet shop has really gone down hill in the last year, it is so sad, and it also makes me angry :tickedoff:,

Should i have got cross with the staff? sometimes a feel myself get so hot that i just have to walk out?

I must say i felt very guilty i had not brought any of the creatures, but you take they re stock, but ,,,,well you know?

best thing you can do is call the RSPCA as soon as you can,I know I def would

but they are not being mistreated, they had food and water, and they all had good weight, the cages where just dirty and smelly and the animals where quiet clearly down,

I would take someone with me next time and when you go to walk out of the area say to the other person how bad it smells and how grubby it looks, I think we will go a buy a hamster from that other shop or just tell them bluntly the area stinks and is an unacceptable environment for animals to be living in. Just make them aware it doesn't do the store any favours. O0

pet shops are like that a lot. My sister worked in one once and they let her go because she was appaled with their treatment. In fact I believe several piggies died in the shop whilst she was there.

Get angry with the staff? No some of them may agree with you but have families and a mortgage and can't risk being fired.

Have a go at the owner if you must. Then call RSPCA. Hopefully they'll get the message.

try going in at a different time of day it's possible that they were due to be cleaned out but you were early if htat makes sense.?
if however you go in next time and the conditions are still bad ask to speak to the manager and if that doesn't help phone the local council as they are the ones that issue the licence :) it's frustrating but if we all do our bit than maybe just maybe we can make a bit of a difference

I would also speak to the mnaager and if you keep finding nothings changed as already said report them to the council and trading standards and tell him you will be doing this if things dont improve

Definitely speak to manager and voice your concerns. If people do nothing it will just continue. O0

I am not very brave like that thanless i am in a rage, then i have to check it because i boarder on the unreasonable behaviour, which is only sparked about a week prior to my time of the month ;D

I urrrge people that see this kind of thing to just say something!

If you dont want to do it that way be a bit sneaky..take someone with you or pretend to be on a mobile phone...look at the animals and look at what is the most expensive animal (if they sell birds that would be great) then act as if you need to fill a whole aviary...chat away and then make a few remarks like 'I would take most of the stock here right now, the birds are gorgeous but the way they are kept looks rather horrific' and ' soandso told me the animals were in a state here but i thought it was worth a look, i shouldnt have bothered'

If they believe they have messed up a big sale (its all about the money) then they are more likely to think 'oh poo' and do something about it in the future. I'm not entirely sure this will work with small animals but the OHs nan (crazy old lady with megabucks ;D ) did this with some livestock she was worried about when shopping for her farm ;D and she says it worked a treat (shes so cheeky bless her) ;D

Even if you tell the rspca and its not 'cruelty' they will most probably mention that the cages need to be kept clean at all times?

It would be funny to try it anyway! ;D

Yes that sound like a bit of a giggle ;D i am at a lose end again tomorrow,

its horrid when you see animals like that. the pet shops where i live are quite good. i go quite often just to be nosy (as you do :D) and ive never seen it horrible or smelly.

You could get in touch with environmental health and say you saw a rat outside the store. :)
