My 2 boys are always on vetbed (fleece) but I am due to move house this week or next and to save time on cleaning out the boys and washing vetbeds. As might be without washing machine for a few day. I have put them on sawdust and also soft straw. But they are so HAPPY! They are chatting away to each other and skipping! This was only going to be for a short time but how happy they are I am thinking of keeping them on it! They are indoor guineas as well!

A lot of people use sawdust - I used to and never had any problems with it but I would just keep an eye on them to make sure it's not affecting them in anyway. I would also change the straw to hay as its softer for them and less likely to hurt them.

It's a great feeling when you hear them making happy noises, it's nice to hear that they like something that your doing for them.

Though they might like it, they don't always know what's good for them (a bit like me faced with a big slab of cake!). There's allsorts of research to suggests it's bad for their lungs- an effect which you might not see until it's too late :... and also their livers I think. Straw also risks eye poke injuries. However, it IS lovely to watch your little happy piggies skipping about :))

Why not skip to newspaper with a layer of hay on top? It's cheap, easy to clean out (you just roll the dirty hay up in the newspaper) and pigs love skipping about and hiding in that too. Mine have also started to eat more hay that way so as an added bonus, it's good for their little round tums!

As long as you get soft shavings that have been dust extracted you should not have a problem. As with all bedding, there is conflicting advice. We use it here and have had no issues with it from a health point of view. We are changing to vetbed when we can as woodshavings are so messy.

I used this for quite a while and my pigs loved it but my piggys have recently got an respiritory infection which i do think was because of the woodshavings (and i used dust extracted) and so i would not reccommend it for full time use i also found that when my piggs wiped their bums after a wee it would get stuck in their bottoms which isnt particularily nice, they are now on vet bed and they love it.
this is just my opinion.

Mine have vet bed just in the bedroom bit, then newspapers with hay on top of that and they love it. Best of both worlds. They also have hay socks, so there is always fresh hay as well as the hay on the floor, in case that gets trampled and pooped on.
