Got home from work about 6 this evening and found George in a terrible state, drooling and wheezing and just looking terrible- his ears were almost purple. Rushed him to the vets and he has pneumonia and what they think is a free draining abscess from where his eye was removed a few years ago.
He's really struggling to breathe at the moment and just looks so poorly. I'm so worried about him- his oxygen is really low and at 7 he's no spring chicken.
Lots of healing vibes needed for my gorgeous George. I'm going to be sitting up with him tonight and I'm trying to work out how to sneak him into work with me.

Fingers VERY firmly crossed!

Can you put him a steamed up shower for half an hour to act as an improvised nebuliser (in a dry cosy of course) and place bowls of steaming water next to the cage. You can add up 3 drops of olbas oil.

Have you been given diuretics that help to clear the lungs?

Keep him warm, but not hot. Keep trying to get a little syinge feed into him if he is a little better.

I've made him a nest in my bathroom sink with the shower running and the door shut (its turned into a bit of a sauna in here)
He was given a shot of furosemide along with the antibiotics to last until tomorrow.
He's sneezing a lot and producing some horrible coloured discharge and not interested in eating so when he's finished steaming I'm going to try him with a syringe. He's still pooping at the minute but I don't want that to stop so I'm hoping I can persuade him to eat something.

You are doing all you can! All the best; I know what a horrible time this is for you.

Turns out the cheeky little blighter just didn't want to eat anything he had the chew! He's just wolfed down several teaspoons of mushed nuggets and about 5ml of water from the syringe. His breathing has eased a little after his sauna so we'll see how he goes on through the night.
Thank you for the healing vibes- paws all crossed here!

@Wiebke could he pass this on to Fred through all the sneezing? Fred's elderly too and I don't want him to catch anything but they pine when separated.

I depends on what is causing it. You have to weigh up the risk against their feelings; companionship is a great anti-stress factor that you should not underestimate. It is your call which factor is more important for you; there is no right or wrong decision when you weigh up the pros and cons for leaving them together even though both are frail.

Thank you. To be honest I think it's better for both of them to stay together. After 7 years of being together I think even a brief separation would be quite stressful.

I would make the same decision for my own piggies (and in fact have made it), but it has to feel right for you so you do not feel bad about it if there are problems.

I know how much these old boys love each other. I know it’s your call, but in your shoes I would leave them together. Huge hugs xx

Sending George bucket loads of healing vibes. Hope you manage a few hours sleep and can get him into work tomorrow okay.

C'mon George, if any pigs got this then you have! It's ok to make your mummy pander to your every whim but please be kind and don't force her to worry due to your demands (perhaps you could chew a little of your food today?)

Just a little update- George, the little pest, was his usual bright self this morning (despite me poking him awake every couple of hours in the night) he's still turning his nose up at non-soaked nuggets but was eating the bowl of soggy nuggets, oats and critical care with gusto, as well as helping himself to hay. His skin is still a little blue inside his mouth but his ears aren't purplish anymore and although he's panting a bit he's not drooling at all.
Keep going George!

That sounds like its a good step forward for him and he is on the mend. Good little george.

Sounding a bit better for George. Keep mending yourself little boy. Get well hugs from all my piggies here.
