Hi! I have 4 guinea pigs and i live in a small apartment and i have a problem the cage smell very bad even if i clean it often. Do you guys know what i could do?
The cage have 105 x 53 x 46What type of bedding do you use?
How big is the cage?
How often do you clean the cage out?
Sorry i forgot to say the unit, in centimetersWhat unit are those cage measurements in (inches I’m assuming)
Do all four piggies live together?
Are they proper cage liners? If not what absorbent layer do you use underneath the fleece
Is it the fleece itself that smelling, or perhaps the hay in hay trays etc?
Ok, thank you, the problem is that i bought the cage for 2 guinea pigs , but i didn t know a guinea pig Was pregnant when i bought her and that s why the cage is smallOk, as it is cms then there are more issue here than the smell. I am afraid the cage is far too small for even two piggies so it is definitely too small for four. Not enough space will cause the smell to increase. The cage needs to be at least 180cm for four piggies to live together and have enough room.
You need something absorbent under fleece to wick the urine away such as puppy pads or even towels underneath to keep the urine off of the fleece and go wick it away underneath to ensure the fleece stays dry.
Ok thank you ! The little piggies are both girlsYes I understand that you didn’t know one was pregnant and that is unfortunate that it has happened, but sadly a 105cm cage is still too small even for two piggies so now you have four, you will need a much larger cage.
The smallest cage two piggies should be kept in is 120cm. This is a UK/US minimum cage size standard and I see you aren’t in either of those countries, but I can say that you will struggle to keep four piggies in a cage of that size. It will smell and they are likely to have problems over lack of space. For four piggies you need a 180cm cage.
Also you will need to add an absorbent layer under the fleece
There is lots of useful information on how to care for the babies. Do post a thread in our pregnancy section for advice from our pregnancy experts. it is essential that you find out the sexes of the babies. Male babies can make their own babies at 250g or 3 weeks of age so they need to be correctly sexed so you can remove any males from the females once they are at 3 weeks of age otherwise they will get the females pregnant again.
Aah little girlsOk thank you ! The little piggies are both girls
