This evening I got home from work to find George's remaining eye was cloudy and there was a suspect more opaque line of white which when I bolted round to the vets was confirmed to be a tear in his cornea. Not sure where it's come from- hay poke or rough and tumble.
From what we can tell his vision is almost completely gone- he reacts to light but not motion.
Our choices were to try medication to make sure there's no infection and to help the tear heal, or to have the eye removed. The vet also offered to PTS but THAT was nipped in the bud straight away- there's nothing else wrong with him so at the moment I'm not even entertaining that as an option.
I've opted for medication but time is short- if there's no improvement in a week or so then we're out of options.
Though George is 7, he's healthy and a good weight, but I don't want him to have to go through another GA if I can help it- it was bad enough when he had his first eye removed 3 1/2 years ago.
Please keep everything crossed for my little soldier!

Poor George! Fingers very firmly crossed for him!

What is he on?

My Nosgan was on ofloflaxin drops (antibiotic for conjunctivitis and ulcers) for two weeks chloramphenicol antibiotic eye gel (3 times a day for over a month), visco tears to lubricate up to 6 times (but not together with any antibiotic eye gels), and on top of that he had a course of zithromax after he bashed in his eye really badly and it went all shrivelled and really badly ulcerated. We managed to save the eye against initial prognosis and even get a degree of sight back in it. He has to have visco tears for the rest of life as the surface of his eye is permanently damaged and changed. But considering the alternative, that is a small price to pay!

He's been given clinagel-vet eye drops which I think are for bacterial infections, to have minimum of 3 drops a day, as well as Septrin and Metacam. I don't think the vet was holding out much hope but as long as he's not in any pain I just didn't want to go for surgery while it can be avoided.

Huge hugs from Switzerland - it sounds like poor George is having a rough time, but at least he has his owner fighting hard for him.
Come on George - you can do it.

Healing vibes to George all fingers &paws all crossed. Hopefully his eye clears up soon. Xx

How is our gorgeous George doing @BertisKing ? X

He's doing much better thanks. He's a tough old cookie!
His eye is looking so much better, a lot of the cloudiness has cleared. Judging by the way he's moving around though I don't think his vision has returned much- he keeps catching his nose on things as he's turning.
Unfortunately I have had to separate Billy from them as George keeps being taken by surprise when Billy bounces into him and there has been a bit of biting from both parties. They're separated by grids at the moment and are still happy to share floor time, so I'm not giving up yet. We'll just have to see how it goes over the next few days- if George has just suddenly lost his vision almost completely I don't blame him for attacking when that little bundle of energy keeps landing on him.
It's a good job Fred is more sedate!

Good that George is improving, but I understand why he would be startled especially since he has lost his vision so suddenly. He must feel a bit vulnerable, so it's great that he has his beloved Fred with him. Hope he continues improving x

He's not quite his old self- he's spending a lot of time hiding in his carrot house, but he's slowly starting to explore the new layout. I've made it big enough that I can get in fully to pick him up so I don't have to come in from above and possibly startle him. Good bye living room floor...

And Billy seems to like the fact that I can get in too!
