Bad Tummy

Oh goodness. I am late to this but have my fingers firmly crossed that she has hopefully turned a corner now. Big vibes! X

Sadly no real update. She is pretty much the same. Hungry and nibbling on veg but otherwise nothing changed. Wish it wasn't a bank holiday today. Poop was improving but back to bad again this morning. I will be at the vets tomorrow insisting on a culture test and antibiotics. Kind of getting annoyed now that vet did not suggest a culture before. I will know for next time.

Poor titch. Had to rush her to emergency vets. Found a new one who was wonderful and piggy savvy.

Basically having improved last night she literally went downhill in front of my eyes this morning. Her gut just gave up working and despite everything, X-rays showed massive amounts of gas. She is also in agony :-(

Loads more medication, very strong painkillers and back on Saturday. It's going to be touch and go but thank goodness we caught it. She is still wheeking for her food bless her!

What are good foods to keep guinea pigs with diarrhea hydrated?

I came from a country where one should absolutely boil tap water before drinking. And here I have been told it is not necessary, but Thames Waters isn't exactly glowing with references over the years. My flatmate, myself and my piggy all seem to have had tummy aches that could be related to drinking that water this year. I am particularly aware of the link because I do not drink just "water" very often at all.

So maybe boil the water (and let it cool) you give to your piggie, even though I can clearly see there is a lot more to the illness of your piggie. For me water can also cause tummy ache from being winter cold - whereas ice cold cola never. Not recommending cola at all, per se, Just showing you the comparison.

On no poor girl, glad the emergency vet could help. Did they add in any additional meds? If you were nearer you could have borrowed my massage pad as it really does help shift gas.

Hi Helen

She is on vetergisic for the pain which has really helped (she had an Injection and now has some refilled syringes of a lesser dose). She is a little 'out of it' but it's only for a short time. She is also now on emeprid as everything has literally stopped. No poop at all :-( I am going to buy a vibrating toothbrush tomorrow but to be honest she was in so much pain today we agreed no massage or vibrations would have helped. I have been massaging her belly as well but I am probably not as good as the pad. She was crying terribly with any pressure.

Re the Niagara pads, they vary so much in price I just was lost as to which was best! Would the toothbrush be as good as I can get this tomorrow?

Hi chopsticus

I do give them all filtered water. It's not a bad idea but I would have thought they would all be ill? I do give them water at room temperature tool you do never know what's in the water though! Interestingly since I have been using reverse osmosis water (effectively tap water purified through osmosis) for my tropical fish for the last ten years I lose most to old age, they go on forever!

Bless her she is still wheeking for her dinner and nibbling through some veg. You can't fault her hardiness, even the vet was surprised at how perky she still was.

Keep the healing vibes coming, gawd knows she needs them . X

Yes it would be good in the meantime. On the link I posted there was one for £25 I think which seemed ok. They are all really old but work ok usually.

Glad she is perkier on the Vetergesic.

Happy to help. Even if you don't use it with Titch (if the toothbrush helps), it's great to have on standby.

I agree. Currently she is sat on my chest all chilled out. Still no poops tho :-( she has nibbling fresh food tho. Hopefully some will come soon.

We have poops! Almost normal ones! Never thought I'd be so happy to see poops....

Fantastic news, hope your girl continues to rally. It's funny how happy you get to see poop's when going through such an ordeal, Keep up the good work Titch and give your slave a well earned rest. x

It's like a huge dark cloud is lifting. She is on a lot of meds at the moment so I am being cautiously optimistic but the painkiller has had an amazing effect and just given her the chance she needs to stabilise. Just keep sending those healing vibes ;-)

Xx

How is she doing today?
x

Hiya

She wasn't great to start with. I found her sat in a load of diarrhoea :-( however I gave her some more food and meds and we have almost proper poops back. Spoke to the vet again and she said it's likely to be that way for a while so just be patient. I did take a sample over but it wasn't enough for analysis :-( they need 5g! I mean do they know have big she is!

So still very poorly but showing some signs of improvement..she did not lose any weight overnight so that's good.

Oh no :( Sorry she has had another episode :( Has she given her any Cisapride at all? That worked really well for Petal, along with the Emeprid. As far as I know, Emeprid works on the foregut & Zantac or Cisapride works on the hind gut (Pebble will know) Is you need a vibrating pad or cushion, I use a car massage seat pad, it is big but I cover it with a waterproof sheet then a towel & sit mine on there. It has a heat setting too & really helps. I got mine from Argos :)

Hiya Poppy's mum

Sorry, brought her in earlier and we both fell asleep together on the sofa for a couple of hours! Think we are both exhausted!
She is on emeprid and Zantac, gripe water, vetergisic and metacam. I am also giving her a little metatone and dioralyte. I am really not sure what else to give her. My vet just thinks we have to see and there is nothing more we can do, I am seeing the emergency vet tomorrow for a second opinion as she was great on New Year's Day and I would say more explorative. Even if she just tells me the same and offers reassurance!

The one plus point is that she has held her weight for the last 48 hours at 740g (she is usually 1005g!). Her poops are improving and no more diarrhoea. But she has no appetite at all other than nibbling veg. I think the vetergisic is making her sleepy as well.

Re the massage mat, Helen found me one on ebay which I am just waiting for. For now I am massaging her tummy which is feeling marginally softer. We just need to manage her pain and gas. I think it's 50/50 at the moment :-( if she loses more weight and is still in pain in the next 48 hours then I will need consider what's best for her.

Not a great update today.

The positive news is that the gas has gone and her tummy improved a lot. Bad news in that fighting for her life her heart is struggling. Found her collapsed at 6am, heart rate and respiration sky high so rushed her to lovely emergency vet. We have given her some Fortekor and seeing her again tomorrow if she makes it. She is very very poorly now and we have agreed tomorrow is decision day if no improvement as she is utterly exhausted and very weak. We will be spending all day together, thank goodness it's Saturday.

And the vet has ordered me some emeraid too.
