Hey all, got back from the vets feeling happy as all problems were seemingly solved bar Tabbys balding legs(metacam did nothing to stop the chewing and there were barbered spots else where), which he thinks is biting lice that may have not been sorted by the xeno used earlier this year or mange. He told me about the small chance of a reaction but said it was tiny and if any reaction showed to just wash it off immediately.

Tabby has had a reaction, she started darting around, shaking her head and ducking backward. I washed it off immediately.

I called the emergency vet and she said to just make sure she was very well rinced and it sould settle down eventually .

I should have read up about it better before application, kicking myself now!

Any further advice to aid her in her recovery? What can I use for biting lice if xeno won't work? He also suggested mange mite could be a problem so suggestions for that may be useful.

Thanks lovely people, getting pretty emotionally exhausted, seems to be never ending Guinea problems this year.

How old is your piggy? Self barbering/overgrooming can also be an indication of pain or acute discomfort for something like arthritis, for instance. Is not necessarily due to skin parasites.

If you really want to go through with an ivermectin treatment, please ask for panomec injections in order to avoid another bad skin reaction. This is the second time this month that we have had a bad reaction to xenex reported on here with the same symptoms. It is not a brand that we recommend.

How piggy savvy is your vet? Perhaps you rather want to consult a piggy savvy vet for a second opinion?

There is evidence to support that there is resistance to Ivomec sometimes it just take more doses than the normal 3. I your instance though i'm not sure x

I agree with Wiebke in what she's said.

I would consider getting injections if your piggie is having this sort of reaction. It's very unusual to have his sort of reaction so do to feel bad about it, I've never had one react this way. It may have been exacerbated by the fact he is already adgertated by the mites already. Three injections should do the job though.

Hope he feels better soon.

Jason is generally very Guinea savvy, far better than any other vet I've been too but still, we have the odd hiccup like this occasionally. we semi ruled out arthritis pain as we had her on metacam for a couple of weeks and saw no difference in her grooming behaviour, she does have cystic ovaries but he felt the hair barbering was too symmetrical to be hormonal. She's 5, 6 next February.

I'll send him an email for suggestions on next moves depending on how she gets on, see what he would do and compare and contrast it with what you guys would suggest, see if he would go down the ivomectin. Honestly worried sick, so unsettling see her act like that when normally she's the most chilled out, friendly happy lay about you could ever met... Unless you're another guinea pig then she can be a grump. Glad she is resting and eating still, just has occasional odd moments.

Also worried that due to this irritation she's going to lash out at the new guy who joined their herd not long ago and make that fail. Argh!

Just a thought if she has cystic ovaries it could be a pain issue as suggested by wiebke.
As they are apparently very painful in humans so probably the same for her.
I had an elderly sow who had hcg chorulon hormone injections for hers she improved drastically in a week, her whole demeanor changed for the better. I'll put more info later I have to go back in from dinner break.
Could be an avenue to try though? Something to discuss with your vet as a possibility?
Healing vibes for her anyway.
Xx
