Balanitis/infected penis

Quick advice please, before i ring the vet.
Arthur has a very red penis which is not retracting properly, quite tender. his actual glans is protruding. i'm thinking infection.
any quick advice bfore i ring the vets?

thanks anyway Wiebke, and it looks as if laura's busy on another thread. i have to say v tempted to take to vets. i'll give them a bell now for advice

Advice from vets is cooled boiled water to bathe. (there is no signs of pus) and see how he is in the morning and if still concerned, then can review in emergency clinic in morning.
presently he is on the lawn with thelma (we're cleaning cages) and he doesn't seem too fussed.

I've no experience of boars with this Becca, the best practical advice I can offer is what the vet said - clean it up and keep an eye on it, check with the vet tomorrow if it's still not right.

Given it is an infection (thus inflammation) and is tender, I personally would choose to dose with Nurofen as well, 0.2ml 2x daily for an adult guinea. I would keep a check for signs of cystitis as well, just to be sure it's nothing along those lines.

is that ibuprofen 100mg in 5 mls strength, Laura?

Sorry I wasn't clearer, I did mean the Nurofen for Children which is 100mg per 5ml dose.
 
Just an update
everything was bathed in cooled boiled water yesterday evening and we managed to get the end of the glans to retreat inside, just. Didn't give ibuprofen as Daddy Pig wasn't keen. Reviewed this morning - looking a lot less inflamed and whole 'apparatus' was back where it should be i.e. a good centimetre inside, but not easily sliding back in once out.
Having said that he is still happily rumbling at Thelma.
It think it will be twice daily checks until i'm happy. i expect it will take him a few days to produce enough lubricating smegma to be effective and put everything back to normal.
Don't worry, if it's not going as expected then he's off to the V.E.T.

We didn't have any probs until a girl arrived! BOYS!:(|)

You could always put a small dab of Vaseline/KY Jelly on there in the meantime.

Hopefully it's all back to normal very soon x
 
I had the same thought yesterday Susan. A dab would help it retract more normally.

Is everything looking better again this morning?
 
Thanks folks for your suggestions. being a GP with an interest in sexual health, a lubricant had crossed my mind.:red i'd never suggest vaseline in a human (it can cause condom splits, for those who didn't know) but it might be appropriate here. KY will disappear within a hour, so isn't really worth trying. I could wax lyrical about the pro's and cons of different products, but need to remember this is a family forum:x:(|)

All looked much better last night. didn't check this morning as i was running late.
i'm still at work, and hour away from home; I will check Arthur later on, but probably not update this thread til tomorrow morning

Well then, you learn something new every day, vaseline over KY jelly any day. :))
 
Hmmm....CCT showed me how to clean a boars intact naughty bits recently

Moving on - my advice based upon experience of having 8+ boars is:
Extrude the penis and apply saline-soaked cotton buds (or cotton wool/kitchen towels) to get rid of ALL the white caked-on debris...(and there's a lot!)

Apply "a soupcon" of cenastan twice daily to cope with possible anit-fungal as a result of the "intrusion".......


And give them lots olf luvuerly veggies......and cuddles......

Personally I still go with the KY jelly It's a godsend for impaction and seems to sort other stuff particularly well..... (even if there are other solutions as mentioned previously for a solely "willy-cake" problem :)):)) )
