Very quick question as I'm in a rush.

My mum's pigs have started chewing the fur off the centre of their backs. They are also very itchy there.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Are they chewing the hairs off their own backs, or off each others? Just wanted to double check although I am quite certain of what you mean!

Along with the itching, the biting is a typical sign of mites - easily treated with Ivermectin. (You can buy a topical solution to treat at home, or have the vet inject them). They'll need two or three doses, around 10-14 days apart.

Yep, sounds like mites. Just wanted to check as if they're just chewing each others hair, that'd be a behavioural problem.

Biting their own backs is a pretty common symptom of mites.

If you gently stroke the bald patches, and they squirm, that is another sign.

If the bald patches are quite big already, I'd go to the vets and have injections. That way you can give them an insecticdal or skin soothing bath to ease the itching. It takes a day or two for the ivermectin to kick in.
