Hi! We just brought home two rescue pigs. However we have noticed quite large bald patches on our girl Koda - they’re on her bum area (a bit above her grease gland). The area is very dry and has these white scales on it. We also found a clump of her fur in the cage - were not sure if this was yanked out by one of the others, or if it just fell out. It seems quite stuck together.

Poor Koda is very dirty and her fur doesn’t feel too great. I am planning on bathing her tomorrow to get the dirt and clumps out. However, what could these dry, bald patches of skin be? What can I do about it?

I would advise that you don’t bathe her, and instead just get her a vet appointment to be checked over. If you bathe her then you can remove of any evidence a vet may need to make a diagnosis.

:agr:

Your vet will thank you if you didn't wipe the crime scene and made their job impossible. just leave be so they have enough evidence for a diagnosis and you can treat correctly instead of getting something wishy washy because they cannot decide on what is going on.

I had no idea! Because she’s very visibly dirty and has some matted fur, I thought a bath would make her more comfortable, but I’ll hold off until we see a vet!

It is impossible for us to say whether the patches are caused by parasites (both varieties of mites are invisible) or a fungal skin infection.

All the best!
