Little Theo has a fungal infection..I noticed yesterday he had a sml amount of dry skin on the top of his head..This morning there was the start of a bald spot.Today we took him to a lovely lady who knows lots about GP's , after mixing some lotions and potions and administering it to him and also to Brock, they now look like scruff balls and Theo has a good size bald patch.Apart from that he's running round like the crazy mad head he always is. I have to leave it on for 2 days then wash it off them.If it as not cleared up fully he will need another coating of it.

Took both Theo and Brock to Out of hours vet tonight..Not Ringworm. We were 98% sure but you just never know.Vet also mentioned Teddy's are prone to.skin conditions.Anyone have skin conditions, problems with theirs?.

I have had great sucess with Gorgeous Guineas products as all 3 of my boys had fungal when I got them - all at separate times

"lotions and potions" can do more harm than good. Do you know what is in these products that were put on your pigs? What if the vet decides they need a treatment that you have to apply topically and it reacts with the stuff already on them?

Personally I'll be sticking to tried and tested medications from my vet.

Yes I know exactly what was put on my Guineapigs. The vet is happy with what has been used on my Guinepigs. The woman in question happens to be a retired vet.I am a responsible pet owner and would never put or do anything to harm any of my pets..I used the word lotions and potions as a figure of speach..didn't realise I should state specifically what was put on my Guineapigs. Everthing used is tried & tested but thanks for your comment.

The only reason I asked, was because some things are used, and may well have a beneficial effect, but when mixed with other things (like if your vet puts something on), can cause a reaction or alter the actions of the medication.

Unfortunately not everyone is so careful. I've heard all sorts of stories of "home remedies" being used with disasterous results mallethead

Yep I fully understand and it's good that there are people on here, here to help. Less experienced people do take things into their own hands ..I have seen first hand what some people do..and not always intentionally..I spent 8 years as an RSPCA inspector. Hats of to you for asking, enquiring.

I work in a vet surgery, so you can imagine the things I've seen too!

I always get "my dog/cat/rabbit/snake/gerbil is doing this, so I gave it this, is that ok?"

Why do they never ask if it's ok before doing it?! mallethead

I know...I wish I knew the answer.Unless you have the experience or know of someone who is experienced..I always say "Take to Vet" I think some of the problem is pet owners tend to find it hard to find a Good vet who as a first rate knowledgebase on their sml animals and it ends up being alot of guess work and then time and money, so people resort to "Homemade Remedies" It's like having a child...if your child is I'll...you wouldn't dream off trying some unknown concoction on them..you'd take the to the DR's. VETS IS BEST. Also a good Pet Insurance, tho they are only sml...it doesn't mean the vet bills will be.

God yeah! I picked up my new girl on Tuesday night, she was insured Wednesday morning!

One of my piggies racked up £2000 in vets bills in the space of a few weeks. She's still here to tell the tale, worth every penny!

What I have noticed, is a changing attitude. More and more people with small furries are persuing treatment despite the costs involved than when I started working in the field 3 years ago.

That sounds positive - maybe owners are taking more responsibility for their small pets and are aware of illnesses. the internet is a wealth of knowledge.
My only gripe is I wish vets would charge a flat fee for consultation rolleyes
The vet we use who is brilliant, is a 45 minute journey for us and charges £17.50 - the one we have used in an emergency locally charged £40 :{
I told a colleague at work who was interested in adopting a couple of piggies to have a vet fund aside and it put them off mallethead

Where I work, we charge £31.95 for an initial consultation (price decreases for subsequent visits for the same condition) whether it's a great dane or a mouse. The justification behind this is that the animal gets the same standard of care regardless of it's size. This is from the company director who sets the prices. The vets disagree, and think the price should be lower, as while they do get the same standard of care, there is less knowledge (unless you see one of the exotics specialists who aren't always available, at weekends for example).

Unfortunately the company director is all about the £££s :(

Good news ..seem to be heading in the right direction with Theo..His fungal infection seems to be clearing up.. Treating him with essential oils Tea Tree, Lemon grass, Patchouli and Lavender and bathing him in Sporal D also used Sudocrem on the area where he had caused a sml cut along with good house keeping. Really pleased with results and Brock as been completely fungal free.Fingers crossed it keeps heading in the right direction.
