I have just noticed yesterday my guinea pig has a bald patch next to it’s right eye. I’ve assumed it may just be my guinea pigs fighting and gaining territory. Does anybody know if this might be anything serious? The other eye is perfectly normal.
We can only guess what has caused the hair loss. It is best to see a vet if you are concerned. Some medical issues such as mites cause hair loss, but this doesn’t seem to look like that, it does look like a scratch. However, as I say, we can’t know what has happened, only a vet can really help if there is a medical issue going on.
However, if your guinea pig is fighting with its friend enough to potentially cause scratches, then it is possible there are problems within their relationship. Guinea pigs should not be fighting. Dominance behaviour is fine, but any fights which cause scratches or draw blood are very concerning and are cause for them to be separated. We would need more information on their situation though if you are concerned about these kinds of issues
I got them both together as brothers towards the end of November, they are approximately 5 months old and haven’t really began dominant behaviour since a week or 2 ago and would only ‘shake their bums’ to show dominance. It however doesn’t feel like any sort of scratch, it only feels like ‘normal’ skin.
Hi and welcome to the forum. I would pop along to the vet to have it checked out and see what's causing the hairloss
I think I might have to. I’m going to see how it is tomorrow and I’ll update.
Please do and I hope it's something of nothing. If it is something like mites or fungal then it's highly likely you caught it nice and early which means prompt treatment will probably clear it quickly
I lost one of my last guinea pigs to an eye infection which was horrible![]()
Did you book a vet check yet? As fur loss on the face like that could be a sign of ringworm which needs prompt treatment and could potentially infect all the animals and people in your house if it isnt dealt with fast with prescription treatment and the proper hygiene controls...
