I've just noticed that my new baby pig has a bald patch on her shoulder about a cm in diameter. It's scabby and crusty and one of her ears is in the same condition. Any idea what this could be? I'll take her to the vets first thing Monday but I'd like some reassurance if possible? And does she need to be quarentined from the others? My first sick pig :-(

Quarantine until you get a diagnosis from your vet- immediate thought is fungal (possibly ringworm) - common in youngsters

hopefully she should be back to her nornal self soon with the proper diagnosis/treatment

Can't humans catch ringworm too? Or is that something else I'm thinking of?

Try not to worry Keli. This warm weather can make guineas more prone to illness as well, particularly skin problems. How old is your girl? Has she been in contact with any of your other piggies already, or is she still on her own at the moment?

Humans can catch ringworm but it's unlikely to be serious (unless you have a compromised immune system yourself). Basic hygiene is obvious, but many people do wear gloves/aprons/long sleeves/change clothes and quarantine the guinea in another room. Treatment for ringworm and other fungal infections tends to be the same, any variations are typically down to the severity of the infection.

She would be about ten weeks old I think. She was in with one of my sows who I think may be pregnant so I'm also worrying about having to treat her if she has it.
Do I need to bring my guinea pig to the vet or can I treat her myself?
