hi guys noticed today a little bald patch on craigs face about the size of a baked bean, his other fur covers it but you can notice it when you look at him properly. i had a look at the patch and it looks a little bit flaky or maybe flaky isnt the right word maybe like a tiny bit of flour on it. He doesnt seem bothered by it and when i touched it he didnt mind.

Just wondering what it is and is there anything i could do to help him? iv only just got him as well cant believe i didnt notice it when i got him.:(

Hi again, (Not stalking you, honest!)

Now that you've mentioned that it looks like the skin has flour on it, I think that sounds like a fungal infection - I'm pretty sure that is a classic sign.

As I said before, I'll let someone more knowledgeable advise you properly but do add the photos when you can as it'll really help.

thanks for this guys. I am unsure what it is. iv had a look on the photo gallery on the website link and by no means it looks not as bad as any of those at all. its not scabby or anything.

Do you reckon i need to take him to the vets? or should i invest in some of that shampoo. I'm unsure what to do. ill try and get him to take a picture. i doubt i will be able to catch him though lmao. :))

If in doubt, always go to the vet. WE are only lay people on here and can only guess based on the info you are giving us.

Fungus has several forms, and not all looking scaly.

hi guys really hard to capture this on pic but its a bald patch under his eye at the side of his nose you can catch it slightly on the picture. iv spoken to my mate she seems to think its a fungal infection. If so what is the appropriate treatment. can i get any creams for it?

Fungal by the looks and sounds of it.

How old is Craig? Over 12 weeks and you can use the shampoo and melt.

I have also used daktarin on fungal with good results BUT not sure you can use it on a face so close to the eye. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon who can tell you for sure.

hi thanks for the quick reply.

Craig is only 10 weeks old. I'm a first time owner so i dont know what I'm doing. i only got them friday. I'm a bit gutted about it really. do i need take him vets?

May be worth doing just for surety.

I am treating my pig with a fungal infection at home without seeing a vet but you decide - it can't hurt.

You can use a cream called super souffle from gorgeous guineas now and maybe email the lady at that website (Chrissy) and ask her what's best to do she's a wizard at this kind of thing and will be able to help you. It's quite a common thing and as long as it's dealt with quickly wont cause any further harm. It's a good job you've asked :)

She also sells tester pots of the shampoo's and melts for dealing with fungal, you can order them for a couple of quid and on a small pig like Craig (Obv when he's the right age that you can use them) it may be all you need for a few baths / melts to clear it up.

aaw thanks lisa i appreciate your help. I think i might get some cream and see how he goes for now. only problem is i will av wait for it be delivered first will he be alright for a few days. ill order it tonight x

just had a look on the website and they arent processing orders outside the usa until after 28 march. i dont want to wait that long. Where else can i get something?

Thanks

I just had a look myself. GG website has a link you can follow to order via The Hay Experts website during this time. It sounds like Chrissy will be unlikely to answer email enquiries quickly, if at all, for the rest of the month.

I personally would take him to the Vet, just to be sure. As he's a new pet, it'd perhaps be worth getting him checked over anyway. I think fungal infections are one of the things that owners come to recognise, with experience, so perhaps if it ever happened again in future (although hopefully it wouldn't!) then you'd feel confident in treating it yourself without a diagnosis from the Vet....but for now I'd recommend seeing a Vet.

There's a list of recommended Vets posted as a 'sticky' at the top of this Health & Illness board, if you need to find one.

thanks for this. i looked on the hay experts website but couldnt see a suitable product.damn

my friend has advised me to use canestan on it, I'm a bit unsure what to do. ill have a think on it over night.

I've heard of other people here using Canesten cream on guinea pigs with fungal infections but I couldn't say whether or not it's a good idea as I don't know enough myself.

I do know that you sometimes have to be careful when using creams etc as they may be ok to use on one part of the body but not on another. Also you have to be very careful putting creams so close to the eyes and nose, so basically I wouldn't use anything until you're sure!
