I noticed today that Timmy has a small bald patch behind his ear, probably about the size of a 1p piece. I haven't noticed it before but then I am still getting to know him and getting confident with handling him, so it could well have been there before.
He was treated for mange/mites etc at the rescue and was all well when he left.
The skin looks pink and healthy. That ear is a bit ragged as he clearly came off worse in a fight somewhere, it is ripped completely in two (and well healed again). In the centre of the bald patch there looks to be a healed laceration, about 6mm long. I'm feeling that this is all related and the bald patch has always been there and I've just noticed.
Just in case it hasn't always been there though is there anything I should be looking for that would suggest something that needs treating? He isn't particularly scratching (I've noticed him do it once or twice in the last few days), he grooms happily, but he isn't a lover of having his ears on either side touched, I'd assumed because of the trauma he'd previously had to them. There is nothing that suggests fungal or bacterial infection to me (assuming piggy skin does similar to human skin when infected).
I'd biro round to see if it grows but I don't think he'd sit still for me (and not sure whether the human tactic of watching for spread would be entirely appropriate, lol...)
