I have 4 Wiggys and think one of them either may have mites or one of the others may have been biting her - what should I do :-\? Do you think I should get her to the vets? She does not have any sore bits on her, just that her right side seems a bit bald and she seems find in herself. Any help would be great thank you.

This probably is mites. You will need to go to a vet for Ivermectin. There is no need for injection,it can be applied to the skin.

I really apreciate it guys thanks to iloveanimals and maryh O0 your'e all angels and gems 0:) :smitten:

Hi guys

Just to let you know we took Poppy to the vets on Tuesday and she does have mites so he has given her some meds and we have to take her back on 22nd for a check up.

Thanks again for all your help. :)

He has given her an injection. Is there anything we can give all our guineas to prevent mites, like the spot on liquid you get for cats and dogs? We would prefer to do this rather than having to inject the guineas.

There is nothing you can do to prevent mites. They are present on all piggies, but in such low numbers as to cause no problem. If a piggy gets stressed or is not well, the mites will sometimes proliferate and start irritating. Some gps are more prone than others. Many pigs are never bothered with mites, others can be affected several times. There is no longer any need to inject Ivermectin,it can be given topically(Zeno 450).It can also be given orally but I prefer the topical.

Thanks for the info. Thought it was something like fleas on cats (i.e. preventative) although we do have four pigs together and only Poppy has been troubled with the mites - the others are fine! Would we still need to get the medication from the vets if we wanted the topical meds or can you buy it elsewhere? She's going back to the vet on Friday this week to get checked so we can ask our vet then anyway but it would be good to know beforehand.

Thanks again for your help :)

Probably best to get it from a vet.Zeno is avail;able online but I personally am wary of buying meds from the internet. They could be fake or out of date with new labels stuck on.

Thanks we will ask the vets. We wouldn't buy meds over the net either, just wondered if you could buy it at p@h or somewhere like that. We will check with our vet. Thanks again for all your help.
