Hello, Both my guinea pigs have lost a lot of fur on their underside and the skin has become really dry and flaky. There are some scabs too... They have been to the vets and are on Baytril and are being treated for mites too, but I wondered if anyone had any ideas what could be causing this to my piggies? :...

Possible emerging urine scald??...are they copious wee'ers? (my un-neutered boars are rolleyes)......And does their fur get wet then they wee?

My pig Africa recently had the same thing, I find vets useless (and I really hate them) but as I didn't know where else to turn I took him to the vets, just as yours was, he was treated with Baytil and mite treatments. Clairelove also treated him for lice.

I then visited my rodentologist (used to be on this forum until people booted him off) and he checked him over, said his balded tummy (two back legs, balls, tummy and chest were naked) were the cause of bad skin and he either pulled it out himself or it fell out. Anyways, I was adviced to wash him in an anti fungal shampoo (check GORGEOUS GUINEAS on google) or theres some you can get from the chemist. It'll help all skin problems and is recommended to wash every few months at least. :)

Hope this helps, btw Africa's hair started growing back, it's been 2 weeks and it's nearly all back. So once it starts growing again, you'll see the difference quickly.

Watch their weight.
