Hi! Butters my almost two year old sow has always been itchy and has always been losing hair evenly all over her body - my vet said to think of it as if a person who has a lot of dandruff, and that she's okay. However, I've noticed her bald spots behind her ears are getting bigger because of her itching.

Is this normal? I just had her looked at a month ago and the vet said she was fine. She shares the cage with Peanut, my other sow, and she isn't itchier than usual so I don't think it's a parasite or else it'd be on both pigs.

HELP! once again, I'm panicking. =[

It's normal for guinea pigs to have the bald patch behind their ears so don't worry, and some are bigger than others.

Everyone scratches sometimes and so do guinea pigs, if your vet says they haven't got mites then believe him.

Yes all pigs have bald patches at the back of the ears, but keep a close eye that she isn't losing fur anywhere else.

As Snowball our boar started of having pretty big bald patches behind his ears, then we noticed he was losing fur on his feet and around his eye, but now is been treated for the 2nd time for mites.
But it won't necessarily be on both pigs, as Snowball has a cage mate and both times isn't showing any signs of mites at all, but still been treated.

But my other three guineas don't scratch really.

The bald spots on her were always pretty big, but the problem is they've gotten bigger... but I'll definatly keep an eye out for other bald spots. So far, none... I brushed her out last night with a fine toothed comb to pick through her fur and found nothing. Well, nothing except the fact that my pig loves to be groomed and layed there limp purring while I did it. Maybe she just needs to be brushed more to get all that excess fur out of her thick coat? I'll give it a try...

Thanks, you guys. =]
