Hello,

My guinea pig has recently developed a bit of a bald spot near his nose. The first signs I noticed were a white liquid in that area coating the fur (which I initially believed to be boar glue). The next day this was gone and had a bald spot in its place. I monitored it for a couple of days and took him to the vets when it still appeared the same. As it was localised and the area had no scabbing, crusting, or inflammation, nor did myself or my family members have symptoms, the vet ruled out ringworm - though this wasn’t directly tested for. She also visually inspected the fur and didn’t see any mites. She prescribed isaderm for a possible irrational or scratch which I have applied to him now twice daily for just under the maximum seven days and believe the area has actually gotten worse (please see the pictures of before and after). I am unsure whether this is from him reacting to the isaderm or the condition itself.

He isn’t showing any other worrying signs, he’s still eating and doesn’t have any other balding spots. I still don’t see any redness, inflammation or crusting. He is slightly itchy but he does do this regularly as he has sensitive skin.

I am going to be recontacting them vets however I am second-guessing their judgement as he didn’t see his usual guinea pig vet specialist and they didn’t do an overly thorough inspection (although their website note they do offer exotic pets services).

Do you have any advice? Is there anything else this could be?

What a sweet boy, love those whiskers. I hope you can get an answer to what's going on soon. One of my boars pulled the hair out on his nose when he pulled/knocked off a lump of boar glue. The hair did grow back but I can't remember how long it took. It's hard to diagnose skin problems from a photo, if you are worried it would be best to see his usual vet.
