Hi everyone

I know that there are few posts on here about piggy balding, but I just wanted to get some opinions about my piggy, Pea.

Pea's chin keeps balding and then growing back. The fur seems to get really gunky and then falls off just below his chin. I presume this is a fungal infection? I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow after work, but wondered if there is something that I should be doing in the meantime?

Llewelyn had a bald patch under his chin from last summer until he died, which behaved like that.

He was treated for mites and for fungal, but neither made it disappear completely again. In the end, I just used aloe very cream to soothe the bare skin.

However, it is good that you have it seen. Perhaps a skin scrape can help with finding our what it is.

He seems happy enough and it doesn't seem particularly sore.

Bald patches (which may then become infected with fungal etc) can also be caused by dribbling (slobbers) which might indicate a possible dental problem so it would be a good idea to get his teeth checked at the same time.

It's quite difficult for the vet to see the molars on an inspection as the piggie's mouth is normally full of green gunk. I have found that withdrawing all food/hay and only feeding cucumber without the skin for an hour before seeing the vets helps to clean up their mouths making an insepction of the back teeth easier.

You might also think about weighing him daily to check his food intake is still good and he isn;t losing ay weight as that is another indication of a dental problem.
