Hello,

I've noticed this balding patch on Leo in the last couple of days, he doesnt seem too bothered by it but it looks quite big too me and the skin looks kind of mottled.

I've checked my other boy and he doesnt have a corresponding patch so I dont think it can be a natural thing. Can guinea pigs have hair loss in old age?

Hair-loss is not a natural thing however they do naturally have a bald patch behind there ear so i'm not sure if this is what it is so you may need someone to clarify that ?

Yes I know that. My other boy doesnt have one. I'm googling etc but not coming up with any ideas - ringworms are either shockingly serious but no early ones.

Further Insight please

I dont believe its a natural thing but doesnt seem to be causing him too much trouble. I've been into the pet shop today and tried to speak to one of the assistants who didnt really give me any insight but suggested stress ... I have been online and done more research on the topic but none of the pictures really describes what I am seeing on Leo.

Since it doesnt seem to be causing him too much hassle I guess I will increase his consumption of fresh vegetables, t hay and maybe treat them to one of the dandilion varieties too. If there is no improvement in a 7-10 days I will see a vet.

Any further insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bald patches behind ears is perfectly normal. The skin on the pictures dont look raw or infected or even fungal in any way so i wouldnt worry. If you are worried please seek advice from a vets, pet shops are not qualified in anyway to help with medical problems. No offence, i just seriously wouldnt bother asking a pet shop.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, but to me it looks like normal bald behind ears.

Depending on the colouring of the piggie some of them have like a pigmentation in the skin like your piggie.

Thanks for your reply. I will keep an eye on it. I have found that pets shops can be very helpful in giving advice on different things, a lot of the staff seem to have had guinea pigs at some point and are willing to help if they can.
