Looking for new ideas of what fruit and veg to feed my new young piggies. They love cauliflower leaves, can't get enough grass and cucumber, and are eating carrots with tops. They don't seem a fan of parsley yet (shame as I have loads growing in the garden!) and haven't eaten broccoli florets.

Trying them with green pepper today.

I have read somewhere that piggies can eat a small amount of banana and with the skin on is this true and do any of your piggies enjoy it, how much do you give?

Also, another question, I have been putting the veg in whole, sometimes breaking into two pieces, but do I need to chop it up?

Thanks!

my boys like banana but the girls dont. Mine get celery Romaine lettuce corgette (they do like it) carrot apple pear tomato if i have any in pepper mint (hit and miss some like some dont) parsley, cucumber sprouts and a wee drop oats each ... I give them a selection of 4 per day and rotate. I buy the herbs out of aldis infact i buy all their veggies and herbs out of aldis. I'm still always on the hunt for other things they can get. I have one piggie thats not keen on veg but he eats silly amounts of hay but I'm slowly introducing veg into his diet. The rest veg is there one minute got the next ! Ive only ever had 1 baby piggie and its not until now shes in a herd she eats veg xx

Hi Lisa Ann,

I'm fairly new to the forum and owner to guinea pigs. :)

I offer my two girls about a 3-4mm slice of banana each, maybe once a week at the most. I have tried them with the skin on, but they weren't fussed. You could do the same and see which they prefer. :)

Maybe I could offer it more often, I don't know, but I understand that if it's offered too often, then it can cause constipation.

I've tried both flat leaf and curly parsley, coriander, basil, of which they enjoy.

I've also tried fennel, dill and one other herb and they didn't like those at all.

I offer a big leaf between them (or a leaf each) of the romain lettuce each day, together with a slice of cucumber each, cut in half. A carrot each is offered in small batons, maybe just twice a week.

They also love a little cherry tomato between them, which I cut in half and half again and deseed. They love those too. :)

There is probably more, but I can't think right now, will pop on later and add.

They adore hay, which they have lots of too.

Just adding that they love a floret of broccoli each and a small cabbage leaf, baton of apple and pear. The fruit is only fed on a weekly basis and maybe just once or twice for that week.

Hope that helps. :)

Beth.

2 of my girls like banana but not the skin. They only have a couple of thin slices each roughly once a week as a treat. The other 2 girls aren't keen.

Like Wiebke, I too cut my fruit and veg in to chunks. For some reason, they eat more when it is like this.

All piggies are different though and if yours eat it whole, it isn't a problem :)

As I have 4 pigs, they would squabble to much if I didn't cut the veg in to chunks so that they can each select what they wish to eat.

Mine love bananas but they very rarely get it and only a little bit each time.

Mine love peppers, spring greens, curly kale, lettuce, apple and they love fennel. They also love parsley.

I do have a new boy Toby who hasn't been with me too long, and he is really fussy - there's loads of things that he won't eat.

I have had my babies for 4 weeks and they have enjoyed banana a few times. They absolutely love celery chopped up and prefer the broccoli stalks to the florets, which is great for me as that's the bit I normally throw away!

I only tend to give them fruit a couple of times a week. They also preferred the red peppers to the green ones, not sure if it's because they are riper or if they are just fussy boys!

Mine too love parsley but turned their noses up at basil and sprouts.

Hope that helps x

All piggies are different. And prefer different things. I have two piggies that won't touch broccoli, or the stalky bits of cabbage leaves, and I have one that will eat anything you give him, but doesn't really eat dry food.

I feed mine carrots, curley kale, cucumber, cabbage, broccoli.
I tend to feed less fruit then vegetables. They like banana, grapes, oranges, kiwi, melon, stawberries (very messy!), and some eat apple.

Bananas are great for tempting poorly piggies to eat. I usually mush a little up when i have a piggy thats had an op, to start them eating again.

Mine eat nearly any fruit & veg in sight but won't touch banana.
They especially like apple, beetroot (only thing is Patch, my boar, has a white chest and is a bit of a messy eater), melon and strawberries.
They get celery, carrots, cucumber, spring greens and the big leafy lettuces (not iceberg) regularly plus they favourites every few days.
