I recently bought two young boars to introduce to my older boar since his companion died. Right now, they're set up in two identical cages with bars separating the younger ones from the older one. Everything seems to be going fine except for one of the younger ones is biting the divider bars a lot, especially when the older one is near. The older doesn't seem bothered by it and just continues on with his day. Is the bar chewing a sign that the younger one wants to be in with the older one, or a sign of aggression?

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry for your loss.

Bar biting just means would like to get to know you, put myself on the map, see your territory and see whether you are a bigger boy than me. ;) In itself it is neither a sign of wanting to bond or being aggressive; in all it is generally excitement (positive or negative). Which will only decide during actual bonding.

Please be aware that trios in general, but especially boar trios with sub-adult boars (the more the more babies are in the trio) are the bond most prone to ending up with failure; in fact, more trios of any constellation fail than succeed. They are the bond particularly vulnerable to any outsider problems, even more so when you add in the stress from the huge hormone spikes teenage boars suffer from as there very often two piggies getting on that bit better than the third.

Please take the time to read these guides here and make sure that you have the option to split the boys as necessary or to keep them as next door neighbours if the bonding is not going well.
