Barn Hay

Hi there, I'm new to this site. I have 2 female guinea pigs. One 1 and a half years old and the other is 2 months. I work at a horse farm where hay is abundant. I believe the hay is a meadow grass, alfalfa mix. Currently the pet store's in my area only carry kaytee timmothy hay which is what I feed my pigs. The price for this hay is ridiculous considering that a 50lb bale of hay for horses only costs around $20.

I was wondering if it is safe to feed my guinea pigs hay from the horse farm. The hay is stored in bales, in an indoor riding arena. It is safe from water but can get slightly covered with sand dust. Can my guinea pigs become ill from eating this hay?

I'm not exactly sure what sort of hay you're talking about, but I just give mine regular hay that we either buy from a local farm, who provides for horses too, and also from my Grandad's friends farm. Both seem to have had no bad reactions. They 200% better quality then the rubbish (being a nice word) stuff you buy at places like Jollys

Hi i am the same, my guineas just eat hay that we buy in he bale from our local farm, i have no idea what type of hay it is, but my pigs love it and have been eating it for a few years with no problem, so i would say that the hay from your stable will be absolutly fine, in fact i bet its really good stuff x
