Barney Has A Growth/dry Patch - Not Sure What It Is

My boys are really trying to cause me as much worry as possible at the moment. About a fortnight ago I found what appeared to be a skin tag on Barney's side. I have just had another look at it and the skin tag is no longer there but in its place is a rough, dry feeling patch and his hair has fallen out. Any ideas what this could be? Do I need a trip to see the vet?

It's really difficult to tell, my first thought would be a fungal issue but I could not be certain from a photo. I would get it checked by the vet.
 
No until you know what you are dealing with I would leave it alone. If fungal is diagnosed then I would recommend Imaverol dips. If the vet wants to test for fungal, the only type that tends to show up in a culture is Ringworm so if it comes back negative you could be dealing with a different type of fungal.
 
Am I right in thinking that they can pass fungal on to each other so Toby will need treating as well? Don't worry - I'm not doing anything without vets advice. Will phone up with an appointment tomorrow.
 
Yes he would need to be treated too. I can give you more information if it is fungal after you have seen the vet.
 
@helen105281 - it turned out to be a cyst. The vet squeezed loads of gunk out of it - luckily it wasn't infected. I have to squeeze it twice a day for the next 7-10 days and hope it doesn't return. He said it may return or turn into an abscess in which case he would need surgery :o(

He had a second problem that I am more upset about - vet says he is fat! I like to think of him as chunky! I need to put him on a diet and make them start working for their food - I will start another thread for advice on this.

That doesn't sound pleasant - hope it clears up quickly and doesn't return!
I find it hard to believe that Barney is 'fat'! Piggies come in varying shapes and sizes, and as long as he has a good diet and gets plenty of floor time then I really wouldn't think too much into this x

I really like that reply but to be fair he does look like he has swallowed 2 table tennis balls!
 
Better too fat than too thin. Piggies lose weight so easily and so fast, and a bit of extra fat will keep him warm in winter. My little boy Clyde has always been thinner than the girls, even though he eats exactly the same as them. It may be because he is neutered. Is your boy still in one piece? Spirit, my late un-neutered boar, got quite fat.

Yes - they are both still in one piece. I had to laugh at the extra fat keeping him warm in winter - they free range all day in my lounge on the underfloor heating which is usually on at 20degrees - maybe I should turn it down - the warmth could be making them lethargic!

That's good news. Hopefully it won't come to him needing an op.
 
I hope not! He was ever so good for the vet but I think he will be a nightmare with me when I have to sort it tomorrow - he really doesn't like to stand still!
