Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone keeps any basic first aid stuff in for their piggies and what you're recommend if you do? Piggies are living very happily at the moment but I suppose the odd scratch could occur if they decided to test each others boundaries, or got a patch of sore skin or other minor injuries/ailments.

Note I realise that gps can deteriorate quickly and I'm not suggesting I couldn't/wouldn't rush to the vet if I seriously thought anything was up, but I'm looking at my family medicine cabinet and not sure I can use any of the creams etc on the pigs so worrying I have nothing for first response measures!

Any suggestions gratefully received.

for small scratches or sore feet i use germoline. my vet has said this is ok and does not harm the piggy in fact it is quite good because it also has local anathsetic in it so helps if there is any soreness. still watch the cut or sore patch very closely and if not healing or improved within a couple of days or i am unsure in any way still take the piggy off to the vet for professional opinion.

Prevention is better than cure. Weigh your piggies weekly and give regular checks ups to catch any illness or injury quickly and make sure you have a good vet with an emergency service should they get ill/injured.
I wouldn't use any human medications on guinea pigs unless being told by a vet that they are safe. With cuts or scrapes I would wash with boiled (cooled down) salt water if i couldnt get them to a vet straight away. Other than that if they are unwell I'd keep them warm by giving them a heat pack/hot water bottle and make sure they are eating. I wouldnt do anything else or try medicating without a vets say so. I'd try not to worry too much about it though if your pigs are happy and healthy.
