I've looked on the guinea pig shopping list and it's not there.
Is it alright to feed pigs fresh basil?

I feed mine fresh basil & they love it O0

Yup, all mine except Lennie love basil. I grow it in a big pot O0

Mine also love this. I tried it today. They were snatching it from my hands.

I tried mine on basil as I was under the impression it was a safe food. (They wern't keen!)

However, in Vedra's new publication it lists basil as a 'never' food, along with spinach (which I know many, many people feed their guineas) It does not say why it is a never food though unfortunately :-\

Hmm i wonder why? :-\ Are there any more herbs on the "never" list? cos my piggies love dill, corriander, thyme & mint too :)

Hi Niki, I was surprised to see it too. The other 'nevers' include:

Spinach
Chicory
Alfalfa Hay
E. Additive Guinea Pig Mix
Basil
Swiss Chard (no idea what this is!)
Water Cress
Sweet Clover Hay
Beetroot TOPS
Raw Potato
Rhubarb
Buttercups
Moss
Bindweed
Leaf or flower of bulb plants
Evergreens
Ragwort
Ferns

There are a whole list of wild plants as well, but cannot see any mention of coriander or mint etc on there, but have been reliably informed that coriander is safe to give...

Sorry :-\

Thanks for that Julie O0

The only thing my piggies get regularly on there is Basil but they have had Watercress before. Found this about Swiss Chard - Chard is a member of the beet family and has a crunchy stalks and spinach-like leaves. :)

Perhaps it is because of the high ca count? I've fed it in the past, but not too often.

I've fed Basil too and Chicory and watercress! eek! Maybe it is because of the high ca content! Mine lovely chicory!

I'm sorry, it doesn't say why :-\ I know a lot of people have seen some of these things on safe lists. I am especially surprised at spinach and basil.

Hmm..out of that list I've fed Spinach, Basil and watercress...all with no problems :-\

This list here, which I trust a LOT and know maaaany people do, http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum...read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html#post254730 say that basil is find once or twice a week..also says chicory is fine 2-4 times a week, swiss chard almost daily, watercress 1-2 times a week, beetroot tops 1-2 a month and more aswell..now, I trust that link a lot and i know loads of people rely on it..yet I know the CCT and Vedra are very knowledgable :-\ ?

Yes, I've recently been directed to that list and found it useful. Then I saw this in the book. Now I don't know what to think!
