Hi, do Guinea Pigs liked to be bathed? Lacey has been cleaning herself like mad over the last couple of days which is very cute to watch as she goes up on her back legs and rubs her cheeks with her front legs, adorable but wondered if I should bathe her, I dont want to scare her....

I wouldn't say they like it, some guinea pigs don't particularly mind it. Guinea Pigs are very meticulous about their hygiene and are always grooming themselves. Unless she smells or her coat is a bit minging you shouldn't bath her her coat has its only special cleaning system with its natural oils :)

:)

Guinea pigs DO need to be bathed fairly regularly (how often varies between piggies) However:
How old is your piggies as i believe (correct me if I'm wrong) they should not be bathed untill they reach a certain age.
You MUST use shampoo for guineapigs/small animal including guineapigs listed on the bottle as guineas have very sensitive skin (this shampoos are easy to purchase online and are stocked in most pet shops)
You must avoid getting water in her eyes/ears
Her cleaning herself if perfectly normal
MOST but not all guineas, hate having a bath so be prepared! :)

hopefully someone more experienced will come along and give you more advice.

:)

Thank you, she is 2 years old, she doesnt smell, only of my perfume once she has snuggled into my neck for her cuddles.

I will try some wipes (from the pet shop) if she needs it before I bathe her, I may end up more wet than her! lol

Thanks again

I would disagree with the post above by Connie, guinea pigs DON'T need to be bathed regularly at all. Yes longer haired breeds may need bathing more often than smooth haired ones. My 2 pigs are 18 months old and have only ever been bathed once as they just don't need it.
Bathing too often can dry the skin out and create problems unneccesarily.
Really you only need to bath if they develop mites or a simialar issue.

Question

Hey bellasmummy, Thanks for the advice, :) Your very lucky you dont have smelly piggies! Maybe its different for girls but my boars grease gland needs a good bath every 3 months or (my piggies are also long haired) and tend to get matted if i dont do so... Am i doing it wrong then? :( *confused face*

To be honest I don't know much about boars, although I think I've heard that there grease gland needs cleaning but without doing a full bath. Someone else might be able to advise better than I can. I just know that bathing regularly drys them out and can create skin problems.

:)

Oh.. well i have read on the tread recomended above that as long as you use correct shampoo you CAN do it every month, (i dont do it that often but am now not worried) :)

I have two boars aged 1 year and 2 years. I have never bathed either and they don't smell x
