(oops i meant to say i 'saw' black flakes in fur lol) Hello all....i just took in 2 new guinea pigs from someone...the older is a female, 1 year old and very fat. I decided to give her a bath and cut her nails and when i bathed her, i noticed tons of what appeared to be black 'pepper' like flakes in the tub. After her bath i could still see some on her fur and i looked at it closely, looks like skin flakes to me..not moving or anything. Does anyone know what this is? Shall i take her to the vet tomorrow? The baby one did not have anything in his fur, he is all white so it would be easy to see. She is an Abysinian and he is a 6 week old Sheba Mini Yak (I have never heard of those until i got him from the breeder). They are both very tame (especially her) and lovely. I will try and post pics later. But meanwhile any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there

It is quite likely that your new pig has 'static' or hay mites. Easily dealt with by using an insecticidal shampoo or spot on treatment. Injections of parasite control does not work effectively with the surface feeding parasites as they do not feed off the host's blood.

Please ensure that the male is kept separately from your females as he is now old enough to get them pregnant. Your new female is not suitable to be bred from due to her age and weight, it would be very risky.

sounds like skin flakes to me not to worry about, sheba mini yaks do not excist, this is some fancy name given by some ill informed people who think they have something special, hope you did not pay over the top for her?
what country are you in?

I am in the US...Hawaii to be exact. I paid $20 for him (the 'sheba mini yak'). I too never heard of it until the breeder told me about it but i did google and found some info and pics on them saying that they are a new breed? Not too sure.

oh and yes Suzy, the 2 of them are kept in seperate enclosures as i do not want or need any babies ;)

Black flakey bits describes to me as mites, this is what I saw when my pigs had them, it is the skin not the creepies so don't worry about that, but please do not delay in treatment.
Easily cured with Xeno:

3 doses of this, 2 week apart will clear the infestation. xx
