Hi everyone :)p

I've bathed mine before, so I know more or less how to handle them.
I was wondering - how often should you really bathe guinea pigs?

Thanks! :)

I think you should do it as little as possible - pigs don't need baths regularly. I would only do it if they are particularly dirty and haven't cleaned themselves up. Pig is 3 and he has had 3 baths... (3 too many in his view).

It depends on the breed - smooth shorthair piggies like smooth and crest collect a lot less dirt than rough haired piggies like rexes or teddies. Longhaired piggies are much more prone to collect dirt and pee on their hair and need more baths.

I don't bathe my piggies unless they are very dirty or there is a medical reason. Any bath will destroy impact on the skin film and the group scent.

I probably do mine about 3 times a year, as little as posisble is the best way as wiebke said, too much can destroy the natural film on the skin so unless they're actually mucky I wouldn't worry. Mine are indoors on fleece and dont have outdoor run time as we only have gravel so they pick up little dirt. :)

I bath my long haired one more often than the others (she needs it despite keeping her hair shorter at the rear end).... my dark short haired piggies hardly ever get bathed... but seem to stay cleaner,

i have a Peter Gurney guinea pig book and he says that it is vital that you should bath your guinea pigs once every three months so it keeps parasites away and makes their coats clean and healthy

I used to bathe my last two pairs every 6-8 weeks with "Flea or Die" as recommended by the CCT & they had lovely coats & skin. It kept any lice away. In fact using that I never used any spot on treatments at all as I never needed to :)

yes...we bathe us about every 3 months. we have 7 short hair and 1 very long hair (that i keep trimmed) ..they need bathing as the boars do tend to get messy on their bums with their gland secretions:))..plus they can get stinky too.. our piggies get cleaned out every day without fail..they are indoor piggies.
