After adopting Lulu, we were told she had surgery on her back about 2-3 weeks ago. We’ve only had her and Nelli since Saturday, but they’re already happy to cuddle and relax beside us.

However, when stroking them, I’ve noticed how horrendously filthy their fur is. It’s very matted in certain areas (especially on Nelli who has really long fur on her back), there are clumps of hair stuck together by god knows what, and after stroking them, my hands are sticky and nasty. I’m planning on trimming off all of the nasty bits of fur which are too matted to brush out, but I was wondering if it would be appropriate to give them a bath?

Even if it was simply rinsing off the fur with some warm water, to try to get the ick out. I presume they’ve never been washed before, and I know piggies hate baths, but their fur is really filthy.

Would it be okay to get Lulu’s surgery site wet? She still has sutures in, but everything looks really nicely healed. Sorry for asking so many questions, I’ve never had piggies in this state before, so I just want to do right by them!

Thanks!

If your piggy hadn't just had surgery.. I would say a little bum bath in warm water would be ok but not sure due to the sutures...

Someone else with more experience will be along soon...

I would be hesitant about bathing too. Is it just the one who had surgery? It's unusual for a piggy to be rehomed before they have fully recovered and the operation was so recently. I would probably be looking to go to the vets and see what's causing her to get so dirty. What was the surgery for do you know?

I adopted the two girls from pets at home on Saturday. They had been neglected by their previous owner, so I presume they probably haven’t ever been bathed - which would explain the nasty fur. I don’t know what conditions they were living in, but to put it into perspective, their toes have grown wonky because their claws were never cut before being rescued... Both girls are this filthy. Lulu is the one who got surgery 2-3 weeks ago, apparently to remove a golf sized tumour on her back.

We’re in the process of getting pets at home to give us the full medical history from the vet that performed the surgery, as we weren’t told anything really when adopting.

Poor pigs.. it sounds really irresponsible of P@Home to re home them in that condition! It's good that you are getting the medical history!

I would check with the vet about bathing the piggy who had surgery, maybe wait until her sutures are gone... sounds like an awful situation you've been left in by the pet shop :(

I walked in, and was shocked no one had noticed her eye. It’s like surprise after surprise with the ladies. Their poops are TINY, so I’ve got some probiotic and tummy care in their bottles. Nelli is also weeing pure calcium powder. Hopefully with all of Lyn monitoring and interventions, as well as vet care we can get the ladies to top form!

Our next appointment for her is in two weeks, but I might call in to enquire. With how dirty she is, I honestly don’t know if bathing her would be the lesser of two evils, given how much filth must be around the surgery site😓

We’re gonna try our hardest to get things sorted for the little ladies! At least I have the comfort of knowing they’re safe with me, and I’ll try my hardest to give them the best life 🥰

Aw, you sound so caring, hope you can sort out all their problems x
