Depends on the type of piggy - long hairs need doing a lot more then short haired
Also the colour effects it in my opinion mainly because if they have certain foods such as beetroot, they look like vampires :))

My mainly white piggy Aleera gets bathed every 4/5 months and she is short haired
My darker short haired piggys get bathed every 6 months if that to be honest
Long hair piggys need to be bathed every 1/2 months and brushed lots

Boy piggys will also need there glands washing more often as they get older.

thanks so much that was really helpful percy is a rex and he stank so i bathed him last night he loved it swimming around bless him it was funny to watch biscuit was squeking at him so i put him in with him so they played for a bit and then we dryed them off :) then they smelt like roses much better :)

I love it after I was my pigs they all smell so gorgeous! shame it doesn't last :))
 
Washing up liquid also works on grease glands.

Mine get bathed every 2 months, but the long-haired pigs tend to be bathed monthly. It is good to hear of piggies enjoying baths, of my 12 only two actually enjoy it. :))
 
How old are yours leander and what did you use to get them smelling of roses?
 
Mine get bathed whenever they need it - I try to leave it as long as possible so it's probably about every 3 - 4 months, if not longer. They're going to be getting a bath this week.

I currently have Gorgeous Guineas mint one - so they will be all fresh smelling.
 
I'm sorry to be very very dumb but where is the grease gland? I know it is towards the bottom area but where exactly? I've not seen any area on my boys that looks grubby or greasey is that because they are still young? (They're 18 weeks) I haven't bathed or cleaned them at all yet as they seem to be clean and don't seem to need washing at the moment.

Thanks and sorry to ask what feels like a really silly question that I should know the answer too.
 
thanjks everyone i bathed mine in jhonsons baby shampoo but they did love it its soo funny when they swim around lol percy is now 12 weeks old and biscuit is only 10 weeks old i think :)

Not a silly question at all!

The grease gland is where the tail would be, if they had one. It is about half an inch off the ground when they are sitting normally. A couple of my pigs have very sweet dimples on their bums, right over were the grease gland is!

Some boars' glands never get dirty, while others have very active glands which get sticky and built up very often. At 18 weeks, it is unlikely your boys need theirs cleaning yet, but it helps to keep a check on them routinely. :)

Thanks Laura, thats really helpful. I've been meaning to ask for ages about where the glands are but kept forgetting, I kind of figured that I would know where they were if they needed cleaning as I'd see that they were dirty. Thanks again though, at least I know where to be looking now, hopefully I've got a while to go before my boys need a bath as they do seem to be quite clean. Fingers Crossed!

I bathe mine once every 4-5 weeks. Sometimes I can even go 2 months! Which is great!
Arnold is long haired and smells pretty ripe after a few weeks, Ralph never really smells and he's short haired but because I heard (From you lovely people!) that it can help bond them, I bathe them together.
They don't seem to get so stressed out, I don't get so wet and it's an easier experience for all 3 of us.

So I think it depends on how they smell :(|)
If they smell ripe, it's bath time!

there is a grease gland on there cheakes, lower bottom, and lower back.

Yep, a small blob massaged neat into the grease gland (with a wet hand, so it lathers just a touch), it softens and lifts the grease nicely. :)
